One question though, you get sworn in prior to completion of the academy?

Congrats. Maybe you'll be like that graduate a few days ago who nabbed a mugger on his way out of Madison Square Garden after his swearing in ceremony!

My Dad's cousin (what does that make him to me?) was a member of the service for about 15-20 years in the 80's and early 90's. Worked some crappy areas like Bed-Stuy and Jamaica, and I think also somewhere in the Bronx. He ended up moving out to Nassau County to get real $, and retired from there a few years ago.

Will you choose a DAO Sig 226?

Yes. In NY State, you must actually be a sworn police officer or Deputy Sheriff to attend a police academy. So usually the day before you start the academy you take the oath and are sworn as a police officer. In most departments you don't get your badge, credentials and firearm until you graduate the academy, but you must be on the books as a police officer/deputy in order to attend training. It is possible to pay for your own academy in NY if you can find a police department that will sponsor you. These are usually small, part time departments, but a lot of them will agree to swear you in as an officer if you foot the bill for the academy, uniforms, etc. and often times you're expected to complete your field training time without any pay.

To the Original Poster: Congratulations on your first accomplishment in law enforcement, getting hired. Good luck in the academy. Work hard and absorb as much as you can. Remember the many before you who wore that uniform with pride and do your best to honor them. Congratulations.

Your Dad's first cousin would be your first cousin once removed.
