Time for a Doc appointment, but I've heard good things about Benadryl. Just don't want to depend long term on sleep aids. I was told by a Doctor a while back that this is what he uses on those lack of sleep times.

benadryl works well as mentioned above.

I know since I hit 40, I don't really get a good 8 hours sleep anymore like I did in my 20's & 30's. A good night for me is 6-7 hours tops now....

I'd settle for that, 6-7 hours, and exercise would be a good move for several reasons

That's what I thought, more exercise. Then I thought about some other things. Is there any stability in your life from day to day or is it chaos all the time? Is there something on your mind, some problem you can't resolve, people stress over alot of things and that prevents a person from getting good sleep.

You've pretty much nailed it right there. It's tough eliminating all of lifes stresses, especially these days. But this is something I do need to focus on. Just need a band-aid solution temporarily

I should try this. It seems to work for my wife, I guess it stops her from hearing herself snore, because it ain't me.

You didn't mention anything about caffeine, if you drink it or how much.

I was having similar trouble until I cut my coffee down to one mug in the morning.

I never had trouble falling asleep, but I would wake up in the middle of the night, wide awake.
I can now sleep my 7 -8 hours normally.

Dr appointment would be a good thing. I did that once and was given the hairy eyeball from him as if to say, "So what, you're wanting me to give you sleeping pills? I don't think so". Walked out of there feeling like a druggy that wasn't able to get his fix.

Couple cups of coffee in the AM and that's about it. Going to turf that now altogether and go with decaf

They've banned that in a few countries and I haven't been able to get a grip as to why, I was thinking about that one. Weird, o-k in the US, but banned other places. They really should get their shit together.

Go get checked by Doc - could be sleep apnea. I finally after browbeating by my family when.

They did a sleep study and I was averaging 171 sleep events (aka stop breathing) per hour.

I just started two weeks ago a CPAP machine at night.

I am up to six hours of straigh sleep.

What a difference! I am now awake all day, no nodding off on the train/car rides, have a ton of energy that I even joined a health club to start working out and swimming again. I am literally bouncing off the walls.

Go to doc and tell them everything - don't hold back.

I wish I would have done it a year ago

Been to Vegas lately? A good 4 days of non-stop party usually nets me a week of 8 hr/night sleep recovery. Cool

X-smoker here too. I enjoy a nice cigar once in a blue moon with a tumbler full. Been drinking more bourbon/canadian than scotch with a cigar, as I find single malt best with a clean palate. I don't advocate this route, especially how it can become addictive vice. Drinking to fall asleep? Bad.

Exercise is good, you're in Canada, IIRC, so anyplace close you can go take in a good hike? Fresh air and exercise at higher altitudes?

Also recommend a trip to the Dr. While I don't have any kids, and I'm still relatively young, I sleep about 5 hr/night. You should be able to get it, but let them know you want a non-habit forming aid to reset your clock. Once I'm done with school in 7 months, I'll get some more samples from my Dr.

Ask about: Rozerem

It was pretty good and helped me get more sleep.

Good luck and hope you get your sleep right.

Hahaha......Vegas, going there for the Rock n Roll Marathon December 6. Your advice in under advisement. I'll start training now. Big Grin

Low altitude where I am, but it won't be long and we'll be back down to -40 F temps up here so that helps with the snoozin.

Thanks man

If its persisted for a year you need a doc. Can't imagine you overlooked this, but I agree with the caffeine intake question. Are you chugging coffee to operate on so little sleep? I would be. Perhaps that's messing with you.

Get up at 4:00 am and work out at least once, preferably twice per day. Try it for a week.

No booze.

No caffeine.

Run 2 miles every day; at least two hours before going to bed.

Lift weights thirty minutes every day; same time frame as the run.

Consult a nutritionist and follow his/her advice.

"Wind down" for thirty minutes or so before going to bed.

I do none of these things right now, but I did in the past, and they worked wonders for my sleeping.

Very good advice. If you ran for 30 minutes or more a day and drank no coffee or booze and ate right I'm sure you'd have no trouble sleeping.

Yes it is difficult, but it can be done, I've done it and if I can do it anybody can. Things always work out, one way or the other, we can only work on our reaction to them, especially when we don't like the outcome.

I personally don't condone medicating oneself because it can lead to dependency in some individuals. Not necessarily you, but just watch it closely please.

And if you're going to use caffeine, make sure to drink more than the normal amount of water.

My doc told me to drink 1 ounce of water for every 2 pounds of body weight, more if I exerise or use caffeine. I weigh around 200, so I drink over 100 ounces of water a day because of my exercise regimen. I also like the occasional caffeine laden sodapop with some foods so I'll drink more water afterward.
