There comes a time with every car when a new payment is cheaper in the long run

Not true... Used cars are always cheaper. Buying a $500 beater every 6 months is cheaper than buying a new Kia every 5 years. A $500 car isn't going to be pretty, but it'll get you from A to B for at least 6 months. For the past 8 years I've driven nothing but 25+ year old sports cars (plus one rusty Bronco)and have never had to budget more than $1k a year for maintenance. Way less than a new car payment. Plus insurance on a used car is about 1/3 what it is on a new one. I finally broke down and bought a newish car this year, tho. It's nice, but I wonder if its worth bending over for the bank every month...

A miata..... No self respecting straight man should EVER drive one.

Well, I'm well and truly fucked then- I've got both a Subaru *and* a Miata.

'Course, the Miata has a 220hp turbo kit and I regularly embarass Mustang and F-body guys, but, well... call me a queer I guess. Wink

right, but that is NOT an outback. Subaru makes some cool cars - but the outback is not one of them. Maybe I forgot to mention that my car was an outback?

Hey, I've seen modded out sweet outbacks.

There is only one gay Subaru.

That is the Baja. Big Grin

The roommates PoS Dodge Shadow has around 280k on it. He bought it after his in-laws had it totaled from a rear ender. He's trying to beat 300k on that car and will probably do it.

The Miatas ARE an absolute blast to drive on winding country roads. (They were originally designed after the MG... but with a better suspension and electrical system. Wink) I actually prefer the older models.

Other than that there was nothing wrong with it at all. When it came time to replace the Subaru, there was almost no question that we would get a civic.

Well, if your wife is truelly driving all over the state. The gas savings alone, will probably eat a very good dent into the car payment if it's replacing a Tahoe's gas mileage.

It had just rolled over 100k when I bought it and I put nearly twice that on it over a decade. I'd expect that much out of a new vehicle.

why would Toyota say anything about the Miata???

(hint, it's a mazda)

tho,

IIRC toyota owns ~20% of Subaru's parent company,,,

Whatever dude. Have you ever even driven one? You are aware that they are the most prolific sports car ever built and have entire racing series devoted to them right? For the money, it is the most entertaining car you can buy.

I like Minis too and thought about getting one. My sister has one and I think it drives great.

Still think the Mazda is more fun though. Big Grin

i think the Mazda is more fun too...i'm just not an open-air guy. the hardtop Miata does look interesting.

the Mini used to be a "turn in your man card" car too...but it is a blast to drive and it's easier to sucker the unsuspecting

Has it ever occured to you guys that if someone over 6' tall cannot fit into a Miata, it was NOT designed for guys to drive it?

I'd take a 3 year old Vette over a new Miata anyday of the week. The vette will out handle it, out brake it, and downright smoke it in a straight line, not to mention a real man can actually fit into it.

i'll bet you don't think you'd fit into a MG-B either Big Grin

we won't even mention the time spent getting the sound right or the fact that Mazda is produced the most accurate BRG paint.

if you think a Miata is hard to fit into, you should try a Toyota 2000GT...and no one has ever call that classic a non-guy car

I've driven a Miata, and NO I cannot fit into it without being pressed against everything. The horrible days of valet parking about 10 years ago. An MGB is roomier, albeit a lot less reliable. Neither of those cars excell at anything, nor does the Toyota 2000GT.

Thought about buying a used 'Vette while car shopping. At the time, gas was $4 a gallon. I know that the Corvette gets great highway mileage, however the city mileage would become expensive at those kinds of gas prices.

I can have just as much fun in the Mazda, it costs way less to operate and insure, and I am much more confident in its reliability.

Besides, a 'real man' doesn't base his masculinity on the type of car he drives or how tall he is anyway. He drives what he pleases.

I got to drive a 180hp or so Miata.

My car has close to about 250hp.

The Miata literally scared me it was so fast. It was like a 180hp gocart.

Miata's are cool too.
