I lick parallel to the edge of the flap – never had any problem doing it that way. I’m guessing that you had tongue cuts. Maybe the reason I don’t suffer those is because I’m never short on saliva.

I never lick one. If it's someone else's envelope, I use a glue stick or scotch tape. My own supply are all peel and stick.
