I noticed my 16 year old buddy limping on her rear leg earlier this week so I took her to the vet (new vet as I just moved here 4th of July). They examined her, x-rayed her, drew blood, and drew urine. They believe she tore her ACL on her rear knee, and due to her age she is too old for surgery. The good news is like humans, both ends of the ligament heal and the pain goes away after a week. Left with a kitty anti inflammatory and kitty morphine.

I decided to purchase pet stairs for the couch and bed since she enjoys sitting with me and sleeping with me. Of course, she is a bad patient and refuses to use the stairs. She actually walks over to them, sniffs them, rubs her cheek on them, limps over to the bed/couch, and leaps on bed/couch. When she is done, she leaps off instead of using steps. Here is my attempt at training her steps use with treats:

So far, she eats treats off lowest 3 steps and ignores top step Roll Eyes

Tell her not to use the stairs then walk out of the room.

Mine would follow treats down into an erupting volcano Big Grin

Great strategy though Todd...hope it works out for the kitteh!

Apologies for the thread drift ahead:

Is your kitty a fatty or no? If no, then some do ok in about a month (a week sounds ambitious), but some require surgery. Those that don't get surgery are generally very reluctant to jump after the joint tightens up. If they put kitteh on metacam (meloxicam), be sure to get liver enzymes checked on in a couple weeks.

tatortodd - try a paper box; the kind that you buy with 10(?) reams of paper. Our old tabby (now passed) has arthritis and we would take these boxes, fill them with magazines or old books to make it stable, and drape a towel on it. He would jump up on the box, stop, turn and then jump up on the chair or bed. For our bed we used three boxes as a stair. And it was free!
