I took a bunch of pictures with the new iphone. Nothing important but would have liked to keep them.

WTF is HEIC and why isn't this pointed out more explicitly when you buy the phone? I now have a bunch of pics I can't view on my PC even after installing the HEIC codec (probably a MSFT issue).

Seriously, these big companies are so fucked up. I don't care if it's Apple or MSFT or both. If I take a bunch of pictures without knowing this AND I need to go chase around for a solution, these corps have FAILED.

Assholes.

Yeah, just found that out recently. Just download the free online software to convert it to jpeg. More time and effort wasted.

What Mark wrote ^^^^^, but...

There is a flaw in what Apple's doing with photos and videos. Don't know if it's in iOS or iCloud, and I really don't know when it started, but photos and videos taken in portrait mode and downloaded from iCloud via the web interface come out rotated 90° as if they'd been taken in landscape mode.

That's not a big problem with photos. I just load 'em into the GIMP, rotate 'em, and save 'em back out. But videos? I could not find a video editing app for Linux that worked with which to rotate videos. Annoying.

Hopefully they fixed this in iOS 14.

ETA: *sigh* Updated iPad to iPadOS 14. No such luck. Portrait orientation is still screwed up. Good job, Apple

Don't they automatically convert if sent via text? I seem to remember reading that... Could be wrong.

Try texting the photos to yourself or someone else and open the texted photos on the PC.
May need to be sent SMS and not Apple message...

If it ain't woke... don't fix it.

I have mine upload automatically to Prime Photos on the phone.
Download from Prime Photos to the PC. No issues.

If your photos are being updated to iCloud, just log in to the account and download it to your computer. I've done so in the past.

Alternatively, you can install the iCloud client for your computer. It will automatically keep the photos synchronized on your computer.

On some iOS versions, it is Settings/Camera/Keep Normal Photo. This will save your pictures as a .jp[e]g
