Potential Forgiveness of Student Loans? Login/Join

I get furious anytime I hear a politician is proposing legislation forgiving any amount of student loan debt.

I graduated from college in 1984 with a BA after attending for six years (I know, it's supposed to be four, but I had a REALLY good time!). Anyway, I had over $15K in student loan debt upon my graduation. I ended up joining the USAF and I paid a significant portion of my pay each month to pay my debt until it was paid in full. My wife, my son and I did without for several years until my loans were paid off. I signed legal loan documents as an adult and I fulfilled my legal obligation to repay the loans. I didn’t cry about the interest or the fact I took out the loans. I just paid my debt.

These idiots who are complaining about incurring a mountain of debt have done it to themselves – a classic self-inflicted wound. No one put a gun to their head to go to college, or to take out loans to pay for their education. They were adults when they signed the loan documents and they knew what they were signing up for.

Let’s face it, college just isn’t for everyone – never has and never will be. The idea that everyone should go to college upon graduation from high school is an outdated and flawed tradition. Also, the assumption that a college degree somehow guarantees you gainful employment is a myth. There needs to be blue collar workers just as much, or probably more so, than white collar workers. I spent six years in college, got my BA, and then joined the USAF where my degree was of no use to me at all.

So now, I (with my tax money) am supposed to pay for these idiots who haven’t/won’t pay back their loans? That is complete and total BS! They need to accept full responsibility for their actions and pay their damn loans back. I’m sorry they didn’t get the $100K/year job they thought they were going to be offered upon graduation. That’s not my problem and it never will be.

If the current administration decides to forgive ANY amount of student loan debt, I (and all other loan recipients who paid off their loans) need to be repaid every penny of what WE paid on our student loans. ......Like that will ever happen!

I say people who graduated with onerous student debts should get some help. Thankfully, the $15 minimum wage will be coming soon so that the people earning minimum wage can help their better educated compatriots. They said trickle down economics has never worked so it's high time we try trickle up economics!

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Why should they receive help? What entitles them to just be able to write off a legitimate debt they incurred? Maybe someone should repay my truck loan just because I don't want to repay it?

So, this mutual fund in my retirement portfolio holding X-millions in federally-guaranteed student loans is a bad investment?

I really wish I had stuck with the program and graduated from barber college so maybe I could understand some of this stuff. All I ever did was work for a living, pay my bills, raise my kids, and save enough to retire in relative comfort.

If I was just a little bit smarter I could be a politician.

I agree. My total cost with my two children earning postgraduate degrees is close to Half a million. Much more in today's dollars. All brick and mortar instiutions, no online stuff. I am just sick and tired of being forced to pay for others. Giving money to charity of ones own free will is a different matter. Pure and simple socialism is all that it is.

I don't have a student loan. I don't have a car payment. I don't have a mortgage.

I wouldn't mind a check for $250,000 to play around with. How is this different?

Here's your problem. Some of us were born to be worker bee's, others to be the queen or drones. We were the workers, we earn a living and support our families. Then we get to pay huge taxes so our "betters" can do fun stuff and not pay for it. There is no swapping places. You are what you've been caste into. Pay your taxes and shut up.

When I hear of this I cant help but wonder about students who took out big loans but did not graduate or receive a degree. IOW, $$$ for... Nothing.
How many "students" did this? Or receive a degree but then do not put it to use.
I had a short lived part time job with a local grocery. As a bagger. The man who was showing me the ropes was in his early 20s. He told me he had worked at the grocery since high school and all through his college years. When he said this I asked about his degree. It was business management. Was he managing the store? Heading up a department in the store? Nope. He was bagging groceries. For 6+ years.
Forgive thousands of dollars of loan debt so he could pursue a career in bagging groceries? Nope.

I'm 35 & was fortunate enough to only need a loan for my first year (graduated, BBA in 6), but worked to get the loan paid off. Definite feeling of accomplishment when that balance reached $0.00

I know many people who have worked hard to pay off their student loans. They did without while they were paying it off.
I don't hear anything about repaying these responsible people.
Or the parents that saved it up over many years.

I worked my way through 2 degrees. Worked full time all the way through college. Actually during my time in college, from freshman year to senior year, I went from $10 an hour to over $30 an hour. The first 3 of 5 years of college, again earning two degrees, I had to take out loans. More for living expenses (rent, car payment, food) than for tuition. I ended up with 17k in loans when I graduated with my 2nd degree. I was quite proud that i kept it that low doing it all myself with no assistance outside of a Pell Grant for 1 year. Then I paid on that 17k debt for 12 years at low interest until it was paid off. I was proud I did it all myself. I was very happy I had these loans available. And I was blown away when I finally paid it off.

Now these fuckers get it for free and put it on my back as a taxpayer? Fuck that. I could have easily went out of state and racked up 100k in debt. I stayed local instead to keep cost down. I could have partied the whole time and bought shit, but I did not, and was extremely frugal.

Hearing about this shit makes my got damn skin crawl. I busted my fucking ass in college. Working 50 hours a week, up to 80 hrs a week at times. These little ass clowns work part time at best, rack up debt, and whine on Twatter to the government. Fuck you, pay your debt. Deal with it.

I went to college before student loans existed. I went to college when minimum wage of $1.65 was $18 in today's money & a year at U of TN Knoxville was $1,500 total. Of which tuition was $450 a year or $4900 in today's money. Student scholarships were few, grants did not exist. & we worked summers. Many students worked for U of TN at the libraries & were janitors. I went to college when professors had the same salary of an accountant or engineer, now U of TN professors make $200,000 to $250,000 & work 10 hours a week. University's & College's promote the loans to raise the University's income. Student loans are not dischargeable in bankruptcy which was promoted by lender's who told congress that interest rates would decrease. In my opinion, public universities & colleges need more oversight on spending & student loan debt discharge in bankruptcy needs to be restored.

I used to work with a young lady that told me herself that she and her husband have student loan debt and have no intention of paying it back . They probably graduated at least 6 - 7 years ago . Looks like it will work out good for them . They both have good jobs with benefits and have a couple of kids . They'll even get a bump on their credit scores when that debt goes away . Ain't America great ! Big Grin

What about the ones that took out massive student loans, did not graduate and used the money to party for four years. Are we supposed to forgive those loans also?

I did not go to college. I could not wait to graduate high school. I started working when I was 13 or 14 years old washing pots and pans in a restaurant, you know the jobs that most Americans don't want to do. At least that is what we are told by the government.

My now wife was my girlfriend while she was in collage. Her parents help pay for classes and books she paid for everything else (car payments, insurance, gas, dinning plan/food and money to live on.

She worked two part time jobs while she was in school. She would come home on weekends and worked at my uncles business then worked down at school during the week.

I also helped pay bills so she could graduate in four years(a lot of here friends took five years to graduate)

She graduated with no student debt and we were married 4 months later. We bought our first house 2 moths after that and were able to because she did not have any student loans to pay off.

So my question is why can't college students today do the same thing?

I probably wouldn't have a big problem with it if the money was used for books and tuition. Unfortunately to much of the student load debt went to new cars, bigger apartments, new furniture, Las Vegas Vacations (That was me)etc. So, considering all of that----Each need to pay for their loans as they agreed--including me.

Additionally, not a dime should be spent on those schools deemed predatory---U.of Phoenix, ITT etc,
