Take for example, I just watched MBest's latest video. He's got an American flag concealment safe hanging on his wall. Someone in the comments commented on it and a URL was posted directing people to a site that sells wall art concealment safes. I went to the site and while perusing the merchandise, came upon a "Thin Green Line" flag art safe.

Now, I could post a thread here asking what the Thin Green Line is and get a response within minutes. Or I could Google it and get the response in less than a second.

I think overall the point of my post is it doesn't matter. If the question is asked here or on a Facebook page or something then the person, for one reason or another, didn't want to use Google. The answer of "Google is your friend" or some such thing is not doing anyone any favors. If the person doesn't know about Google for some strange reason then that answer doesn't tell them anything. If they know about Google and chose to ask elsewhere then that answer is useless anyhow.

In any case the post in question that set me off was on Facebook in a P250/320 fans page. The question was simply, "What is the difference between a P250 and a P320?

The answer can be found with a google search. The first few results are on internet forums. Now would I rather use those forum answers or go here (or the Facebook page) where I know the members and can trust the knowledge. Sure the answer may be straight forward like hammer vs. striker. But there may be a lot more info and asking people I know (even virtual friends) will be more productive if no faster.

These go to eleven.

That's a BS question!

Of course it is. At '55 Chevy with a V8 would have had a 265 small block, not a 327.

But the OP has to agree there are some posts that do rightly illicit "Google is your friend" or the Here let me google it for you response.

If it is the right response, it does help the asker and other people. Something about give a man a fish and he can make a tuna salad sandwich.

If the response is uncalled for, other readers can make a judgment for themselves whether the person who posted "Google is your friend" is just an ass for doing so.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

I've seen it here when people ask about a certain Sig feature. Today I saw it on a Facebook page for fans of the P250/320. I see it often on many places.

Google provides hundreds of results that often conflict and often never really answer what you wanted to know. It makes a lot more sense to go directly to people that you are sure have the knowledge.

Hell, as far as I'm concerned I've gotten better results on every topic right here in the Lounge.

I am with you. This and other forums are discussion forums. If someone does not want to help or participate in a thread then move on. How hard is that?? Honestly while Google can help there is also a lot of bogus and simply outdated advice on the internet.

the answer to them, fyi, is 7:35 PM EST and Chevy didn't make a 327 in 1955. The 327 didn't come out til 62. You're welcome.

That isnt correct. It wasnt stated that the 327 was original to the car-just that the 55 had a 327. lol. I could have asked what the timing for a 327 in a 67 Mustang was and the answer would have been the same. To answer the question I think it is 4-6 degrees BTDC Smile

One of my favorite movies of all time, and one of my favorite scenes.

Google IS your friend, it sent me to SIGforum where this rant is now making me now smile.

As far as search function just use this to search SF.

People post questions on a discussion forum, like this one, because they want to hear what other peoples experiences are, and they want some social interaction.

Is there a right time to suggest google or some other search to someone? Sure, but when it's among the initial responses to their topic or question, it's rude.

Since we're all sitting in front of computers, rashly suggesting someone use google is a passive aggressive way of telling them they're stupid. Even if you didn't mean it that way, someone who is coming to a discussion forum, to ask other people about something, is not going to appreciate being told to use google.

More typically, people have already searched the internet, this forum, and other resources, and still want human input.

Folks need to keep in mind what the goal of a discussion forum is. Here is an example of what not to do:

Yeah, that thread is a good example of what I was saying. That poor guy just wanted some info. On top of people bitching at him it turned out they actually had helpful information that they should have just offered. I would imagine trying to google search the things he didn't know would be impossible. But in a few replies he had correct terminology. Yet the people giving him a hard time didn't see the irony in that.
