These guys almost won a Darwin award.

The problem I have is people like this get parks and other places closed to everyone. Want to hike on ice fine just get the proper equipment and know what you're doing. That path could be safely hiked with the crampons or other traction devices attached to your boots.

This was posted by the NPS the other day.

Where? Looks like Grand Canyon when I went once.

Darwin should be more relaxed in his awards. Humans have a lot of crap in the pool right now. I’m not sure survival of the fittest is accurate these days.

It is the Grand Canyon, South Rim.

A photo posted this week on Grand Canyon National Park's social media shows two hikers attempting to make their way down an icy trail at the South Rim, a wall of rock on one side and a steep drop-off with no barrier on the other.

One of the hikers seems to be grabbing onto the wall of the canyon for safety as he slowly navigates his way down the treacherous snow and ice-covered switchback.

He's wearing shorts and tennis shoes. He isn't equipped with hiking poles and doesn't appear to be wearing crampons (a traction device that attaches to the shoe for better mobility on snow and ice).

The photo is accompanied by a warning to properly prepare for the conditions.

If i was ever stupid enough to be caught in that predicament, I would be sliding slowly on my ass all the way down.

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." Viktor Frankl, Man's Search for Meaning, 1946.

Two died in a fall n Arches National Park. There the trail was wet and slippery. I saw a photo of the steep park of that trail and it looks much the same as the one posted here.
Heck, crampons are what $30?
BTW how are they going to get back up the trail?

There used to be a sign near the visitors center at the Grand Canyon that read.

How many people do you think fall to their deaths here every year? Not as many as you might think.

I guess you could call that a word to the wise.

That's easy. Helicopter ride.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."

Definitely looks like South Kaibab - near the rim. They'll get to Ooh Aah point and slide right off. Might even be in time for the next updated edition of Death in the Canyon (which is a great read, BTW - you'll do a lot of head shaking).

If they're lucky enough to stay on the trail and don't turn around by then... good luck. They'll have to get at least down to Cedar Ridge before helo rescue is viable, I think. The bills for that service are... not insignificant.

What idiots.
