I like that too. I also like to use it in a sentence.

Who we are as father's and sons and people.

She's my mom, so I didn't want this. I've always had a good relationship with her, we are very different people, but she's my mom and she was a good mom and She's a wonderful grandmother to my son. To see her go down this slide into CNN mental illness land is just hard.

My mom is, too.
However, so far she has been reasonably respectful. She loves her grandson beyond words and wouldn’t risk her relationship with us (nor would I, she’s always been generous and kind). We feel the same, and so we don’t discuss politics with her. The interlude at Christmas was with another extended relative, and since the room didn’t need that vibe, I left, trying to defuse things. She was horrified with the turn of events, and I believe it opened her eyes to how rabid some have become in this new environment (she was the hostess of that event and never had that happen before).

Like the OP said it is those people who are locked up and sit inside all day and night listening to CNN and take it as gospel.

I think my Mom has fallen into that trap also. But she is reserved enough to not push it on anyone.

I stayed with her for about a month last year before I retired and moved. We had a game, she would leave the room and I would switch the TV to Fox News. Or just turn it on and change the channel and then turn it back off.

They need to air some disclaimer about rotting the brain.

My mom has taken a turn to the left lately, and I suspect it is largely because Trump does sometimes make it hard to like conservative policies. Being isolated and alone at 83 probably makes her much more nervous and fearful, too, and the left preys on that.

And my mom has never been one to have an un-articulated thought. Just about the time I think I have convinced her that it would be better not to talk about politics, she lets one fly. I don't let them go unchallenged and then remind her that it is unpleasant when she initiates that conversation.

She will probably never learn, but I can lessen the frequency of her sharing those opinions with me. She isn't personal about it, at least.

I find myself in the exact situation. My parents live 2,000 miles away and we rarely see each other. However, I usually talk to my dad at least once per week, mom more like once every 2 weeks.

My mom was never into politics. My dad has always been a Democrat, but not a rabid Democrat. His biggest gripe is he thinks big businesses don't pay enough in taxes. Back in his day (born in 1947) the tax rate was 50% and the country was investing heavily in infrastructure. The interstate highway program, etc... I remind him that after WW 2 all of Europe was destroyed and we were basically the only industrialized country on the planet.

Now they are both retired and I bet they watch 10 hours of TV a day. Over the last 2 years they have watched every program on Netflix and the other streaming apps. They also watch CNN. Over the last year my mom would make some comment about how Trump said this, or he said that. I usually let it slide and don't say anything back.

Back in the Spring I asked my dad what policies Trump had that he didn't like. His answer was he tweeted this, tweeted that, or was a bully to other people, etc... My dad could not name a single policy he didn't agree with. Roll Eyes I told him, you don't like Trump as a person...fine...don't invite him over for dinner. But to dismiss him because you don't like the way he talks, or what he says?...Give me a break. Like or dislike the man for what he DOES, not what he SAYS .

I didn't speak to my parents from mid-September until Thanksgiving because I feared we'd get into an argument about politics. I called my mom Thanksgiving morning. We made it about 3 minutes in when she started bashing Trump and I couldn't take it anymore. She has never said anything about politics, and she started in, "You Republicans are all the same, blah blah blah", "You Trumpers blah blah blah". I hung up on her, which is something I have never done in my entire life to her before that.

Her birthday is Jan 1, so I called her. We had a nice talk and did not discuss politics, but I could tell something was not right. When the Capitol thing happened 2 weeks ago I got a group text from my dad that included my sister and mom....Turn on CNN...They're going to impeach Trump for what they're doing.

I tried to resist responding, but ultimately I failed. I told them why they said NOTHING when the rioting was going on in Seattle, Minneapolis, Portland, etc... How to rioters destroyed those cities, dumpster fires, broken windows, etc...

We haven't talked since. I honestly don't know where we go from here...

Send her this link and ask her which one she disagrees with. Then tell her you don't want to talk about feelings just facts. That should get you back on the inheritance list. Wink

There’s nothing you can do. There’s no reasoning with mental illness, and quite frankly, you’ll only hurt yourself trying to fix it. There’s no amount of logic nor reason that you can introduce that will make her understand. She is driven by emotion and you are trying to interfere with that neural network by logical means.

My dad was “far right wing”. I mean far right of any of the Trump 2020 types. He met this woman who is truly evil. Bruce Gray met her one time and within ten minutes called her “the most morally corrupt person I’ve ever met”. Bruce never has anything bad to say about anyone. A hard core lefty. She believes that the rules should enrich the left, and punish anyone else. Her FB is full of TDS. Full of smarmy, smart assed hate.

My father moved in with this woman. I eventually had to tell my father that her foolishness wouldn’t be tolerated. He cut off ties with his family because of her.

I joke with my friends that he started out his life killing communists, and now he is common law with one.

There is nothing I can do to change it. There’s no amount of logic I can introduce with someone whose greatest reply is “I know you are but what am I”.

It’s not your fault. You have to protect your kids from this at all cost.

Life is too short to surround oneself with LEE-Bore-Als! Remove them from your life and you will find that your life will be richer. The sky will be bluer, the grass greener, the air fresher, etc...

Doesn't matter if they are family, friends, associates, co-workers, or clients - just remove them.

I've been wanting to use communist American, or American communist. But I'm conflicted. I've never thought of any true American as communist. So, what should we call them? I like the pos etc, but is truly the most accurate description?

We should be calling them "Democrat Socialists", in the vein as "National Socialists" or "international socialists" (Communists).

I've got some friends and relatives that have had their minds bent but thankfully only my BIL is really obnoxious about it. He's easy to avoid and I don't go looking for him.

That said, the sad stories I'm reading here are about as painful as any threads at this forum. If getting our country together is an uphill battle, getting families back is hopefully a little more attainable.

One thing we all should remember is that they're not "liberals." They're about as far away from being liberal as it's possible to be.

Progressives is a much more accurate description.

I don’t care what they are called or who they are. Family is no exception. If they think I’m racist, fascist, deplorable and a criminal, then we are not on speaking terms. Period. At least in my personal life; I need to make exceptions in my professional life.

In the last few days I thought back to a discussion I had in the late 70s. My girlfriend (now wife) had a roommate from Iran. The Iranian revolution kicked off. Irian newspapers made their way to the US and and one point I said - you can't trust anything in the newspapers since they are government controlled.

That roommate said something that set me back. In a very nice ways she said something along these lines: Americans think there is freedom of the press but all you get to see on TV or read in the papers is what the editor or owners want you to see and hear. And this was at a time when the Fairness Doctrine was still in force.

The Fairness Doctrine required news organizations to share both sides. That was eliminated in the 1980s. Now we're left with news outlets that push their political agendas yet many (especially folks in your mom's generation) think we're getting fair and unbalanced information.

If your mom isn't getting input from both sides then she isn't getting a full picture. Sorry for the difficult struggles this is causing for your family. We how have one political party saying they have the moral high ground and everyone else is a hate monger or racist. IMO, no facts to back it up - it's just a claim that they made up.

Hopefully the country finds some way to come together - which includes listening to different views.

A stable republic REQUIRES the voters to be ACCURATELY informed. Today we're missing this.
We've GOT to find a way to fix it!
Without it, all hope is lost.
Fix the cause, not the symptom.

How?

communist works well these days....

Most of these people are not crazy....imagine only watching CNN or reading what Fbook tells you....my mother is one of these people, she is just uninformed and when she brings something up I normally correct her and give her evidence.

My oldest son and I had very good conversations up until a couple months ago. He is more of a left leaning libratarian (sp) and hates Xiden and cameltoe. That was until we had a conversation when the riots kicked off and he kept saying "systematic racism", when I asked him to prove that the SYSTEM was racist....he brought up a few weak arguments about voting ID and closing poll places in black neighborhoods....I made the mistake of not countering with facts...I believe I said "horseshit"

He lost it and told me I was a bad person for several reasons.

We barely talked for a couple weeks and he avoided me until I talked to him and told him that no matter what I love him and that we should probably avoid politics for a bit.

he's 21 and smart...he will learn

Our biggest problem is the media and big tech...they are behind the globalists and the great reset. If they had honestly reported ANYTHING in the past 4 years Trump would have won in a land slide.
