Man... I'll do them all day long. Best thing I did was register on Gun Broker and Auction Arms for transfers. Everybody has been very nice, I get referrals, just today... a customer bought spare magazines for his rifle.

Couldn't care less where they got it. Just glad they're using my services.

Most I have ever payed in my area is $25.00 however we do have one pawn shop owner that chaarges $25.00 pluse some sort of another fee and also some sort of a tax. Needless to say I won't use that place. Most places also are very nice about transferrinf. Last place I used I also bought ammo. from him before I was out the door. Also not to mention I will refer this place to all my gun buddies.

I have a local gun range that is very cool with transfers, only charges $30, no matter how many guns you are transferring.

The odd thing is the pawn shop closer to me than the range will only do transfers for LEOs.

I've been using a Pawn Shop here for a few years. Really nice guy. I used to stop in every few weeks just to shoot the shit and see what he had.
Had several transfers through him for $20. and bought 4 or 5 guns from him also. Now he charges $35. to transfer.

Next gun I buy or transfer goes through someone else.

I wish the shops here would have that attitude. All of them not only charge around 50 bucks, but then they lecture you about the dangers and perils of buying online.

I have flat out told one place that he was getting my 35 bucks for doing less than 10 minutes worth of work and that he should shut the hell up or he would lose ALL of my business.

What I want to know is, can a gun/pawn store put state sales tax on a gun transfer fee? My place I've been using a lot lately told me they now have to tax it for some gibberish or another and that they had to raise it $5 cause of all the extra work. I told him straight up he was bullshitting me and I knew what went into transferring a firearm and it wasn't anything at all. I still use him and told him he couldn't pass the BS through me.

One shop here tried that with me. They ended up waiving it. They said it was because of an "upcoming law." Needless to say i don't shop there anymore.

Wow. My FFL charges $20 for non NRA members and $15 if you belong to the NRA. Never a hassle over time of day, when you want to pick up your firearm and he calls within a couple of hours of delivery by UPS or other carriers. I am sure you can find someone else. Sounds like your FFL is cutting off his nose, to spite his face. . .

It was giving me all kinds of problems last night. Tried it 2-3 times after it timed out and it finally went through. Guess you caught and screenshotted it before I did Wink

Google a local or state gun forum. Search and see where those guys go.

I found a guy that does them out of his house for $20.

That happened to me once...before I knew better. Paid an extra $40 or so in "sales tax" for an out of state purchase which in looking back I'm pretty sure went straight into the charlatan's pocket.

Chaps my hide when I think about it...because he lied to me. And $40 is not chump change to me.

they have changed their stance on FFL transfer charges and upped the rate.

I have heard of shops in California charging $150 for a transfer.

I understand why shops are setting their rates so high. What is happening is people are probably going into their store to look at a gun and then going to GunBroker to buy it for nearly the dealer's cost from someone who works out of their basement. They then come back and want it transferred for like $25.

This isn't an uncommon occurrence. We see it quite frequently and we have a similar practice - we charge $45 for any transfers. We also operate a store with 1400 guns in stock.

I'm not saying you are doing the same thing but I'm trying to help explain the stance of a dealer. If the current trends continue, you'll see a lot of small stores shutting their doors. The overhead and cost of insurance is significant and many stores aren't able to adapt quickly enough.

I live in a Illinois and our store is in Missouri. I transferred a gun to an Illinois dealer and they charged me sales tax on the retail value of the gun but not the transfer. I was a little frustrated since I didn't make any purchase in Illinois. They said the ATF recently audited them and make them collect tax on inbound transfers. Their fee was $35 for the transfer which wasn't unreasonable...

A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and he carries his banners openly. But the traitor moves among those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the galleys, heard in the very hall of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor - he speaks in the accents familiar to his victims, and wears their face and their garment, and he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation - he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of a city - he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murderer is less to be feared. ∑ Cicero, 42 B.C.

My local gun shop told me the same thing about five years ago... (almost identical)
I ask him for his best price and I compared it to Steve's price. I said that if the local guy could come within 20% (out the door prices) that I would buy from him... He didn't.

I have never set foot in his store since.

I have been doing my transfers at a local pawn broker for $20 a pop.

I feel lucky that my guy just charges me $15. I buy lots of ammo from him as well. So it works out for everyone. I used to use another place but stopped becuase even though the transfer was cheaper I didn't think I would ever purchase from them becuase their prices were too high, so I felt guilty.

Gunbroker has a search for FFL's that you can use and find folks in your zip code. For most of them it has their price as well. It is fun to look for some of these folks charging the outrageous amounts (ie. 10% of purchase price, $100, etc.)

However I just found a guy who isn't terribly close to me but says transfers are free and welcome. Probably pretty effective marketing, get people in your store if you have good stuff and decent prices people will purchase other things from you while they are in there.

I used to work at a gun store, to transfer a gun do all the paperwork, get the ffl of where it is going, it takes about 10 -15 mins. I made 10 bucks an hr. Do the math- ( $2.50 of lost labor)it doesn't cost that much money at all. I see a low transfer fee as a marketing tool. Imagine all the business a place would get if they had a free or 5 dollar fee. If I feel taken care of or respected - I am a fiercely loyal customer. By the way - they charged 75 bucks for a transfer-- i always thought I should get some of that, as I did all the work
