had a person call me earlier today inquiring about a job, and at the end of the conversation he gave me his phone number. I asked him if this was a new cell phone number and he told me yes this was his “Obama phone.” I asked him what an “Obama phone” was and he went on to say that welfare recipients are now eligible to receive (1) a FREE new phone and (2) approx 70 minutes of FREE minutes every month. I was a little skeptical so I Googled it and low and behold he was telling the truth. TAX PAYER MONEY IS BEING REDISTRIBUTED TO WELFARE RECIPIENTS FOR FREE CELL PHONES. This program was started earlier this year. Enough is enough, the ship is sinking and it’s sinking fast. The very foundations that this country was built on are being shaken.. The age old concepts of God, family, and hard work have flown out the window and are being replaced with “Hope and Change” and “Change we can believe in.” You can click on the link below to read more about the “Obama phone”…just have a barf bag ready.

Wasn't there a city in MA (or some other eastern state) giving away free cars to welfare recipients to enable them to go to work?

A few local radio station have been running ads about this.

My first remark to my wife when I heard this was "YGTBFKM".

This has been going on for a while. Actually, this is one program that Obama had nothing to do with.

Was he really looking, or just making the inquiries required to collect a government check?

check your mobil phone bill. It's like an extra 5 or 6 bucks a month tax.

Ok I could see providing some form of phone service to those who are on welfare in order to allow them to have a contact point for potential employer contact. I would say that 99% of these people use it for more personal use. They should have to provide a list of calls and prove that they are looking for a job and when they do they should have to pay it back.....the moment it is found to have been used for something other then the job search or emergency ( 911, dr office, tow truck) they loose the phone and any future like benifits.

Yep. It's been on my bill for years.

It's listed as the "Federal Universal Service Charge". According to the FCC, it does the following:

The Federal Universal Service Fund pays for four programs. They are:

* Lifeline/Link-Up. This program provides discounts on monthly service and initial telephone installation or activation fees for primary residences to income-eligible consumers. For additional information see our consumer fact sheet at www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/lllu.html.

* High-Cost. This program ensures that consumers in all regions of the nation have access to telecommunications services at rates that are affordable and reasonably comparable to those in urban areas.

* Schools and Libraries. This program makes discounts available to eligible schools and libraries for eligible telecommunications services, Internet access and internal connections. It is intended to ensure that schools and libraries have access to affordable telecommunications and information services. For additional information see our consumer fact sheet at www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/usp_Schools.html.

* Rural Health Care. This program helps link health care providers located in rural areas to urban medical centers so that patients living in rural America will have access to the same advanced diagnostic and other medical services that are enjoyed in urban communities. For additional information see our consumer fact sheets at www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/...RuralHealthcare.html and www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/RuralHealthProgram.html.

It was a state program that Devil Patrick cooked up, I don't know if it was ever implimented though.

This had been around for a while, but the advertising funding may be new. Either way, I disagree with the program as completely unnecessary. A program for victims of domestic violence makes sense, but not welfare.

Grandcentral (now Google Voice) always had a worthy and cost effective service to the homeless within their business plan. They provided a constant phone number and voice mail service for employment, network, and family contacts during a transient phase.

From what I understand, they have currently given 1200 cars to welfare recipients thus far.

My first thoughts are "I pay for mine so should they". Think I'll ask Nextel if I can get in on this deal with them.

Uuuhhh, yeah... to get to work. That's why they get them...

I think it was a state program, probably backed by Governor Deval Patrick, the Mike Dukakis of the 21st century... Mad
