My wife and I have worked very hard this past year our first year of marriage to get out of debt. This includes paying for most of our own wedding with cash.
We are currently down to the house and the explorer.

In our ventures to bettering our lives and relationship by being financially stable (being that most fights/divorce tend to be money related)

I enacted and we both agree to the rule of not buying anything we cannot pay for with cash.
The house and one car payment is it. Though the car has to have at least 30% down if we choose to finance one in the future.

Well with the recent postings of Bud's having a killer deal on the Sig Pros and Top Gun Supply having a killer deal on Police Trade in H&K P7s.
I really hate this rule!

It will be worth it though. Just have to stay strong.

You can have too many wives but not too many guns.

But FWIW, I never earned a nickel in marriage counseling. Big Grin

If it helps to know, I did the same thing, and still do, it does pay off in the future. Just think about the great guns that will be available when you do have the money to buy them.

When you have the money, there won't be any good deals. Now that you're broke (or, from what it sounds like, more so trying to restrain spending out of discipline), they're everywhere.

Yeah, I paid the mortgage instead of spending some money on bike-related things. Sucks to be an adult.

Let the wife pick out a new gun also. If she can get another to add to her collection, she won't mind if you do.

Merry Christmas, and Happy Birthday, Valentines Day and Anniversary all in one!

Worked for my husband.

Stick to it. Every thing you pay off is that much more money every month, and the time you spent making it, you get to keep to spend on yourself. Every debt you eliminate is like adding a few years to your life.

Man, i know the feeling. There's a LOT of good deals on guns right now. Between some of the sweet PD trade ins, imports, and some folks falling on hard times selling some things off, this is a gun buyers market IMO.

I have a wedding to pay off, academy to pay off, credit card of my recent "non working expenses" to pay off and when i finally get a job a new, more expensive place to move in (unless i want to move to a shitty area and i don't want to do so with my wife.) I can't afford any of these new toys.

I have a fully built lower that i need an upper for (i want to go really high end on this one to complement my KISS rifle) I want one of the 226 PD trade ins, one of the new Russian AK's out being talked about in the rifles section, and one of the "new" 228's being talked about in the pistols section.

Ugh. Being responsible sucks.

My wife and I made the same agreement a few months back. We realized what we make, what we owe, and what we spend and thought, "hell in 3 years we could be down to insurances and a cell phone as our only payments". I will agree with you that it is tough, I almost called to order a 2022 on Monday.

It's definitely worth it. I live by the same rule although I do pay for most things with a credit card just for the reward points. I could just as easily pay cash as I pay off the balance every month.

We paid off my wife's car earlier this year which felt like I got a raise at work.

Stay strong sir, you are definitely doing the right thing by being responsible. It will pay dividens down the road for you and your spouse.

Best regards,

Mike

One of the manly rules is to have a secret stash of $$$. One the little woman has no clue about. Add to it constantly. Even if you must cut grass, firewood, or shovel snow for others. You start small, with a $20 hidden in your wallet. Then it converts to a $100 bill, and then more of them. Keep it well hidden. Its not like you're having sex with someone else. Its just money. You can even be stupid and use a little of it on your wife (flowers, things she doesn't see you pay for.) The trick is to never, ever let her see you've got a small stash in your wallet, shoe, whatever.

Then you progress to the stage where you just aren't open with your gun show trades, sales, or purchases. If you sell a gun for big bucks, you don't dump the proceeds back into a checking account (from whence they didn't come.)

In all fairness, my wife doesn't care these days. But she was overjoyed the day I sold 3 factory engraved Colts and deposited the check!

It just frustrated the heck out of me, years ago, when I had to pass up the Swedish Mauers and the Enfields for less than $100. SKS's too. but I was determined to stick to my plan. Later I was able to buy all three of those and when the "triple numbered" German 2022's came along I was able to take advantage because I stuck to my plan. There have always been periods with great deals, if you have to bypass some don't worry, another will come along and you will be in better shape to buy. I've seen it again and again in over thirty years of collecting.

My wife is not the problem. She has no problems with me buying guns or even putting them on credit for that matter.

I just hate being in debt. May take awhile longer but I would rather own it flat out.

I'm the same way. If I cant pay cash for it, I don't get it. Save for a month or two and if the item you're wanting is still available, then it was meant to be. Or if its gone just set aside what you saved for the next good deal. BTW, I also have my eye on those P7s... Maybe next month Wink

So a "funny" side effect of me always paying cash for stuff is that I have no credit. Recently I decided I wanted a newer car. The conversation with the loan lady went like this:

her: "So I see that there's been no activity on your credit since 2002... Why is that?"
me: "well, I just haven't used it"
her: "...um, well what do you do?"
me: "What do you mean?"
her sounding a little exasperated: "What do you do if you need a new washer or fridge?"
me: "uh... I buy it?"
her: "well, I guess you've just become accustom to paying cash"
me: "Yes, yes I have..."

Her attitude was surprising to me. I guess some people just don't understand how to live without being mired in debt.

Congrats on doing it the right way. Debt is plaguing this country, from student loans to cars to credit cards.
