Why don't you turn in all the people on the internet who admit to drug use? That'd be real useful too.

Big Grin That was funny.

I probably would of shot the little pecking bastard myself, I don't care if it's protected or not, it's causing damage.

I had one that used to tap on my metal fireplace chimney cap. He'd come around a couple of times a week. The sound would come down the chimney and out thru the fireplace. One day, after about a month he was gone. Guess he finally realized wood was much better and easier on the beak.

We get 'em every spring. I figure it's just a mating thing. Luckily, it seems our woodpeckers leave houses alone, and only go after metal.

So next time I shoot a barking dog, y'all are gonna rally behind me right?

Can no one just stop when a thread becomes a pissing match?

Native songbirds are protected - no denying that. I think you should try to solve the problem without killing the animal, but I would not be entirely unsympathetic to someone whose property was being damaged by one. The OP was asking for help, and it immediately devolved into a name-calling contest.

It seems like chiming in to just say, "I shot one once" is not helpful and is just an irritant. Likewise, to some of the other posts n the thread.

I don't know any non-lethal means of removing woodpeckers.

Try baiting the woodpecker? Set up a cedar post, drill some 2-3" holes in it, fill with peanut butter. Might help keep them off the house.

People chime in on all kinds of threads to say "I did that too", I am not going to self-censor myself for fear of ruffling some feathers.

"So next time I shoot a barking dog, y'all are gonna rally behind me right?"

Is the dog destroying your property?
I have shot feral dogs in the woods nad have shot dogs (including my own) while they were chasing stock (property) and ir's legal. Rough world ain't it.

I am not saying this to shock or impress simply that it is a fact and I was asked.

YOu ever hear of the three S's?

shoot
shovel
shut-up

does wonders for bobcats too.

I certainly have, but i'm not going to advocate someone breaking the laws of the Federal government, their state, or their local laws.

Woodpeckers for example, are protected in IL.

I would see if you can find eitehr a feeder, or make something for them.

There may be chemicals you can apply that would ward them off of your house. I assume they are looking for food under your siding. Are there bugs there? Getting rid of the food that may be there might get them to stop going after the food.

I would think it better both legally, and morally, to solver the problem, as opposed to just blasting away at protected species.

People self censor to avoid ruffling feathers all the time. It is one of the things we do in polite society when the first thought that pops into our head isn't directly relevant and might not sit well. Sometimes nothing is the thing to say.

Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act. A federal permit is required to shoot woodpeckers anywhere in the US, and several states require state permits in addition to the federal permit.

A felony.

Idiots.

If the bird is protected under ESA, I would not harm it or interfere with its habitat.

As SC observes, the penalties are severe.

I suppose there is the answer to the question?

What does it take to get a permit? If you show the conservation officer the damage can they help you get issued a permit? Do you have to try a non lethal means of control first?

Maybe the OP could go check the DNR website for any info.

We could definitely use a few DNR's (Do Not Resuscitate) around SigForum lately.

There is some sticky "no roost" stuff that comes in a caulk tube that I've applied up under my roof overhangs where they like to "hang" out. It just takes a few beads of it. It stays in place and lasts, but it gets real ugly as it soaks up dirt, so it's not so good to use where visible. That's one of several methods I've tried.

You bet, metalpeckers.
We have flickers and woodpeckers. Flickers are worse, smarter and more destructive. Flickers have learned to peck out the spot welds on sheet metal eave vents and gable vents around here. Once the screen is gone, they have access to the attic for a REAL peckin' party.
