Just moved into my nice new cedar sided home only to discover it is a favorite spot for the local woodpeckers. We knew there would be some damage, and the first round manifested itself over the weekend. Now I'm pissed and it's my turn.

Any tried and true methods to getting rid of them or at least limiting their destruction? I'm about ready to camp out in my yard with a Feinwerkbau and a scope if I can't think of anything else.

I am with you on this and you have my sympathy. Years ago I had the same problem. At sunrise every morning a woodpecker would attack the home I was in the process of building. If it had been going after bugs I might have had a different attitude but the shithead was pecking through a wall to get the insulation for a nest!
It was in the country so... three words.. Ithaca Twelve Gauge.

LOL. Kinda rough on the walls, ain't it?

Not that I don't love the idea--I'd love to load up the 870 with birdshot, but the neighbors would likely get kind of alarmed.

I could be wrong here, but i thought that some kinds of woodpeckers were considered endangered species and were not allowed to be killed.

I just had the sheathing on and was putting the siding on. I didn't want to let him go for the siding when I put it up. I ended up with a wing shot anyway. Big Grin One thing I like about country living, I can pretty much handle such problems however I want, but the wife did nix the idea of homemade Napalm to clear a "Free Fire Zone" Frown

we just shoot them with a pellet gun.
lil bastards cause huge damage to cedar. the only solution is to shoot them.

Someone once asked me if I was getting a little on the side. I said, "On the side? When did they move it?"

Why do you collect guns? Same reason some people collect snow globes. To kill badguys.

Budget shortfalls caused them to close the "Woodpecker Police Sub-Station" in our neighborhood.

I like how some will freely admit to killing federally protected species.
A felony.

Idiots.

I reference you all to

and recommend you find a nonlethal method. You will do time and spend thousands if caught.

I guess honesty is the mark of an idiot.

You fail to account for the fact that State law, and enforcement, is pretty flexible when it comes to any animal destroying property, and any federal enforcement agency walks very carefully in some areas if it exists at all. Bet that doesn't fit into your "Disney" view of the world. Some places in the US do not bow to federal law when it conflicts with common sense.

Let's not start a fight on this lighthearted thread. I was just responding to your insult, take it like a man.

Permits are required.
Take that like a man. Go tell your story to a Natural Resources officer.
As usual you are nothing but an insulting jackass.
Go pound sand.
If you were here I Georgia, I'd report you.

I remember how that Red Headed one at FT Benning would shut down a hot range fast. They had the pecker patrol

And your "reporting me" temper tantrum would do what? tie up resources on a case with no evidence? That sounds about right. I am sure the "authorities" love getting unsubstantiated complaints from little old ladies too.

You're still a loud mouth jackass.
So you just brag about breaking federal laws.
Either that you you're just another liar.
That's what I'm leaning towards, a loud mouthed liar.

And let's see, I am supposed to provide proof to prove my honesty? Oh come on now do you really think that's gonna "fly"?

In case you didn't pay attention to my post;

"Years ago I had the same problem."

Call anyome you like and tell them that,in 1980,I shot a bird, that may not even have been protected then, at a location 300 miles from where I now reside. See if they give a shit.

Really, before you get your panties in a wad and say you "would turn someone in" you should measure what you are saying.

Why don't you turn in all the people on the internet who admit to drug use? That'd be real useful too. Roll Eyes

My goodness some people on this site are really testy!

I’m all for protecting animals from wholesale slaughter but quite frankly, if an animal endangered or not, is doing damage to my home it will die. Get a pellet gun and kill it.
