Just in case anyone had any question if this lovely state could get ANY worse. The news article title pretty much sums it up. Just counting my time before our departure out of this God forsaken state!!!
I foolishly thought, albeit for a split second, that this state could not get any worse!!


Because son, it is what you are supposed to do.

Just about everyone in NJ is retarded.

The one thing that this guy ran on that would be cool, is legalizing the weed.

I bet that won't actually happen though. If it does happen, the tax money made from it will be lining the pockets of political cronies, not relieving the tax burden on the average hard working citizen.

But hey, the average hardworking citizen in NJ seems to like getting relentlessly butt fucked with a giant veiny black dildo, covered in glass shards because they keep voting the same idiots in.

I have a number of friends who have tried their best to leave but for one reason or another couldn't escape NJ...

It depends on if you purchase a home in another state within a year. I have been told that by several people that have moved out of state but I myself have not seen it in writing. I am told you can rent for 1 year, buy a home and not pay the tax.

Depends on the town. I pay $8,500 for 3100 sq feet. When I first moved in 25 years ago it was $1,600 a year.
Next year, Oyster Creek the oldest operating nuclear plant in the country closes down. They currently pay 14 million in taxes, when it closes it will go down to 11 million and stay that way until the fuel is removed. Currently no nuclear power plant in the U.S. has been able to move any fuel since closing. I'm sure Exceleron will find a way to get out of paying.

When I sold my house, I bought another in days of the sale. I didn't pay and exit tax. there are some fees that are charged but nothing that other states don't use.

Nj taxes are high. but the residents want the govt. to wipe their butt for everyone facet of life. they panic is the thought of self service gas is discussed.



Plus the more affluent towns are supporting the wonderful Democratic cities. you think the taxpayers of Newark are paying the 20k per student in the K to 12th. grades?

While the taxpayer is leaving, the state is replacing them with a large portion of new immigrants. as they use the entitlements to a higher degree than naturally born residents, things will get worse.

Ha! New Jersey...

I lived there for a bit over two years, while in the U.S. Army. Loved the ocean, the boardwalks and the beaches. Loved the inland waterways.

The drivers really, really majorly sucked. I knew, I just knew there was no way I'd escape that state w/o a traffic accident. Actually said to my wife, after just hours in that state, something like "We'll be lucky to get out of this state without a traffic accident." Sure enough, just before I got out: *BAM*! Guy plowed into me trying to pass me on the left, on a residential through street, while I was making a left turn.

Only in New Jersey could the guy completely at fault in a traffic accident take it to court and have a jury decide "contributory negligence."

New Jersey: The first state I was ever in that decided to give left turn priority, despite decades of left turn yielding to through traffic being the standard. (This, of course, meant NJ drivers felt free to try to beat through traffic when a light turned green. Even cops did it!)

NJ: A state that put in traffic circles, then cut cross-traffic lanes through the traffic circles and added traffic lights. What. The. Actual. Frack?!?!

I'm sure that if I thought about it I could come up with more. Suffice it to say that, as many good times as I had there, I was never, ever even briefly inclined to go back.

I've been lurking on these boards for quite some time now, and this topic (and lack of response) is what's prompting me to finally make my first post.

I work for a real estate title insurance company in New Jersey, and I can verify this rumor is true - not just for Monmouth County, but all of New Jersey, and it's not the Realty Transfer Fee that's being referenced.

Several years ago, the State of New Jersey began requiring all property owners to execute a special tax form that must be attached to all deeds upon sale of the property, or the deed would be rejected by the recording office. There is the Seller's Residency Certification/Exemption (form GIT/REP3) for NJ resident taxpayers and contains eight exemption choices allowing for any taxes on the gain to be paid when filing NJ income taxes. Then there is the NonResident Seller's Tax Declaration (form GIT/REP1) for out-of-state residents who MUST pay a minimum 2% tax to NJ for the sale of any property. (Note that this 2% minimum is on the consideration listed on the deed - NOT 2% on the gain on the property. So if a Pennsylvania resident bought a summer property at the Shore for $100,000 in 1990 and sold it today for $500,000 he would be required to pay a minimum $10,000 tax to NJ at the time of the deed transfer (2% of $500,000) - the amount would not be calculated based on his $400,000 gain. He would have to file a non-resident tax return to recoup any amount overpaid, from what I understand of it.)

Now, up until earlier this year, many New Jerseyans selling their homes and moving permanently out of state were utilizing the GIT/REP3 (Resident) form, based on the assumption they would be filing New Jersey income taxes for that tax year and would pay the taxes (if any) on the sale of the property at that time. As of July 2007, they can no longer do so. The state Division of Taxation has "amended" their position that, in order to utilize the Resident form, the seller MUST be moving to a New Jersey address as of the date of deed transfer, or they must use the NonResident (GIT/REP1) form, thereby requiring them to pay the minimum 2% of the deed consideration directly to the state. I can only surmise that the sheer volume of residents fleeing to greener pastures - plus seeing an opportunity to further bloat the coffers - is what prompted NJ in its infinite wisdom to "clarify" their filing instructions

So, while it's not an "exit tax" per se, that is essentially what it has become - one last way for the Garden State to stick it to you on your way out the door.

Hope this sheds some light on the issue.

I wasted two years of my life in the Socialistic state of New Jersey. Could not wait to get out and back to Pennsylvania.

I have a crazy exwife in NJ and no reason to return....ever.

Good reason to get a cheap month to month rental apartment with a NJ address before closing.
