My wife is an heir to the estate of her grandfather who passed just about a year ago. It's working it's way through probate, should be done soon, and at least once a week for the past month or so we get an offer in the mail for a probate advance. The one that came today is from a legal office in White Plains, NY. The estate is in San Diego. Is there like a nationwide alert system that pings all the lawyers whenever someone dies? I don't even want to ask what the terms for these deals are. Mongo only pawn in game of life... | ||

Estate and court filings are public record, these companies are searching for new customers, bumping up to the records and mailing everyone in the US market. Target marking Same thing happens with unclaimed funds, you can claim it for nothing online at the states web pages, but companies search and find prospects and will file it for a fee, They also sell the service when you google unclaimed funds, or any government form service. You have to be careful what web page you're on before you engage and pay someone to do the work unknowingly... | |||

When my MIL became incompetent, the state of Nevada incarcerated her without telling us. She had stopped communicating with us for quite a while, so we were unaware. Her broker finally notified us after several weeks that the state was taking money, so we went out and sprung her, put her in private care in KY, and began disposing of her property. It cost her estate nearly 50k. There's no thief like a government thief. | |||

I know a 77 y.o. lady that defaulted on a $9,000.00 credit card tab. It ballooned to $17,000.00 w/ interest and penilties. After 26 months of a lawyer writing 4 letters, the credit card company wrote her off when she paid $200.00. that was 9 months ago. She should be receiving a Form 1099-C to report the discharge. But whether she receives the Form 1099 or not, the discharge of the principal is income. This was a story going around last year on this. Some private company “hired” by the state would scam old people to signing away their rights and giving the company power of attorney. I don’t know if it was really a scam or they did it by force of law. Separated couples into nursing homes and sucked up their wealth and kept the children at bay.
