Thanks to the panic and the sheeple who are hoarding things that they can't quite explain, I can't (easily) find bleach for my MIL's pool.

First world problems, I know, but come on...

I'm going to have to deal with cal-hypo granules now and that just plan sucks (not to mention costs more).

Dammit.

I've seen it in Home Depot. Likely have to get somewhat lucky though better chance then the grocery store. I haven't seen it in a grocery store since this started.

I agree, calcium hypochlorite is not the best option but will get the job done. It will make your pool cloudy.

Does she have a system that uses pucks?

You can stick a few in a skimmer or even the hair/lint strainer(they will dissolve quicker this way). Just have to keep an eye on levels.

The active chemical(sodium hypochlorite) is the same as the chlorine that's pumped from 55g vasts into your neighborhood pool.

The percentage may be a little less but it's all the same.

This is an 18ft. above ground. It’s hard enough to keep balanced as it is. CYA levels are going to be on my terms. There’s no way I’m putting dichlor or trichlor in it, so tabs are out of the question.

I just want my HD-brand HDX bleach for $3.98/gal.

This is going to be an expensive and tedious season.

Check janitorial supply stores near you.

Also I just bought new bags for my Miele vacuum from a nearby vacuum cleaner store, locally owned and not a big box store, and they have gallon jugs of bleach in stock.

Maybe one of these type establishments will be fruitful for you.

Amazon has Clorox brand bleach crystals in stock. Link

I go to the pool store and pay maybe $6 for 2.5 gallons of 12% chlorine which is double the strength of normal bleach at the grocery store. Watch out for bleach at the dollar store places as they don't list the chlorine %.

If it’s not stated properly, I wouldn’t waste my money. It would take days to figure out and who knows what other crap is in there.

That’s why I like HDX. Commercial labeling and no premium for the Clorox name.

I’ve noticed plenty of bleach and TP in stores around here for the past 2 weeks now.

Maybe supply just hasn’t caught up to demand in your area?

Check Home Depot..

They sell liquid chlorine. HDX. 3 bottle cartons for about $9.

https://www.homedepot.com/p/HD...k-30128HDX/303115700

I switched to this from bleach because of all the bleach additives.

I make one trip to Jersey and buy my whole Summer of chlorine in one trip.

Oh, and it’s 8% vs 6% for bleach, so you add less...save even more money

Try TSC for Hypo-Chlor. Same concentration as household bleach.

Having grown up swimming in a nice pond and sometimes even wading over into the swampy part with leaches and water moccasins... I've always found 'cement ponds' with clear water kind of boring.

I'll do ya one better...I'm on the Board for our community water system. We treat the water that comes out of the ground with plain 'ol bleach!

Growing up we had a 20' X 40' in ground pool. My dad would get some strange looks when he'd go to the grocery store right before we'd closed it for the winter and he'd buy like 10 or 15 2 gallon bottles of generic bleach to dump in teh pool.
