Last night my washing machine tried to run an empty load all by itself. My wife and I were asleep and I think we both woke up to the sound of water pouring into the drum and some beeping noises. My wife got out of bed and unplugged it and that was the end of that. Maybe I should put this in the strange occurrences thread?

The washing machine looks like this but we've had it for a couple of years now so it's probably not the same model.

I really hope it's not some bigger problem I really liked this one. Frown

Appliance Brad should be along shortly.

And for future reference put a Make/Model number in your post as that will help AB look up any recalls or fixes. Just FYI. Smile

Seems like everything we buy nowdays has some kind of computer built in. I've wondered if I oughta put a surge protector on my washing machine power cord to help protect the darn thing.

Hey, it was just trying to help. Put a load of laundry and some soap in before you go to bed, and let the washer handle it when it is darn good and ready to. Smile

Dang poltergeists Wink

No reports of this with the Cabrio/Oasis/Bravos line. I suspect that you have a stuck keypad/membrane switch. if I was running the call, I'd put it into the diagnostic mode (tech sheet is in the console with instructions) and do a key pad test.

To access the console, take a stiff 1" putty knife and slide it under the console at the endcap. You will need to push in to release the clip on each and and roll the console back.

Hey Brad, just so you know, The folks assembling the machines are "Glueing " the console to the keypad, not just using the washers. How do I know, because the problem I had with mine, they had to replace the board. The fella tried removing the keypad to access the screws on the board, and destroyed the keypad. So to save you some time, order the whole console if you need to replace the board, it will save you a trip.

By the way, my Bravos Dyrer did the same thing, turned on by itself, and then promptly stopped working. I did diagnostics, and the code was not one recognized. Had Maytag come out, and had to show the repairman how to do diagnostics... and overheard him arguing with tech support about the code, and them not knowing what it was. 3 visits, 2 1/2 weeks.

I called once it was all back together, and complained about the problems I had with a 5 month dryer, they extended my warranty by a year. May not cost them a thing, but made me happy.

Keep a close eye fiber optic, hope it was just a glitch, and not anything more.

Thanks for the help Appliance Brad but I'm a bit confused.

Does the putty knife need to go under the grey (red circle), under the blue (green circle), or from the side (blue arrow)? I can't tell where the clips are located.

Thanks again.

It should be where the green circle is. It is a "feel" thing. You'll hit the clip and know right where it is.

I caught it in the act today and the display flashes F2. I got a new stiffer putty knife today, so hopefully I can pop the console back.

The F2 is a user interface/membrane switch failure. I suspect that you will need a new key pad.

Let me check and make sure I am giving you good information on accessing the console. I can't get into the Whirlpool tech site right now, it's down.

I'm not having any luck with my new putty knife. I feel like I'm just running into plastic back there. Nothing 'feels' like a clip. I can kinda push the console back and look in the gap but there's nothing obvious.

Thanks for all of the help.

I was wrong on the putty knife. You will need to take out the 3 screws on the back side of the control panel and roll it forward. Here is a link to the service manual. Tear down begins on page 42.

There is also a series of videos on the tear down available here. On the right side of the page is a tab marked Cabrio training library.

Sorry for the false lead on accessing the console. As i said, we are not seeing much service on these washers and therefore I don't see them on a regular basis.

No problem, I probably would have broken a forehead vein if I tried at that for much longer. And thanks again for the help and those links.

Today my wife tried to run a load on the "Darkest Darks". I think this uses a "Cool/Cold" water temperature setting but the lights were cycling as though the button was being pressed. However, it was not beeping. Then if I pressed the button it would beep and if it didn't it acted like it was saving the button presses and would cycle more and beep.

I'm leaning toward it being the brain and not the touch panel. That would explain it turning itself on and running in the middle of the night and the strange beeping behavior.

Not that I know of, I think it's old cotton farm land.

I'm blaming mice for everything. They attacked my step daughter's dish washer a few weeks ago. Shorted out the wiring first and then gnawed through one of the hoses in attempt to flood the kitchen.

They did serious damage to a car I used to own. All the electrics started acting screwy. I think they were trying to sever the brake lines when I thwarted their sinister plans.

They are evil I tell you. Don't think for a minute there are not mouse engineers with complete wiring and hose diagrams of every major appliance.

A stuck key will do that. The beeps could be from the buffer filling due to the board seeing constants inputs from a stuck key. Did you run the diagnostics yet?
