Finally convinced my MIL that satellite is the answer to her inability to receive OTA channels without a traditional roof-mounted antenna at the farm for some reason. She doesn’t want an antenna.

Did a lot of shopping and spoke w/ DTV & DISH. Decided on DISH.

Installation appointments are 8-12 or 12-5 and they give you a more narrow 75 minute window the day of. No problem.

Two attempts made. Two 75 minute windows given AFTER the 12-5 installation window. If this is a 2-4 hour process and I sign up for a 12-5 arrival time, no, it’s not acceptable for you to tell me you’ll be here sometime between 6:30pm and 7:45pm.

Here’s hoping the experience is better once it’s up and running. They really need to either stop outsourcing installation or stop allowing their contractors to overbook.

Practice the phrase "Let me speak to a manager", you'll need it. And ask for and record the name and if they have a agent number, that will come in handy when you call back after tech assistance hangs up on purpose or the customer assistance person lies to you.

Oh, if you cancel hold the UPS slip that you have as proof you sent the equipment back. They tried to come after me over six months later saying that I never sent it back. I still had the tracking number and told them so. The person actually told me that they could not follow up on that and that I was responsible for the charges as it was my responsibility! So again I invoked the magic words "Manager please" and after a few pointed comments to said manager I was told the matter was settled.

Hope your results are different though, this was in 2011 so it is a bit dated but it was my last dance with Dish.

LGiven that the ONLY option is satellite, she’s pretty much stuck (which means I’m pretty much stuck).

From everything I’ve read, DISH is to DirecTV as Verizon is to Comcast, at least since AT&T bought DirecTV.

I know it’s gonna suck if we need any support, but until Verizon runs FIOS down her road, that’s the way it has to be.

I've had both. Started out with Dish and went to DirecTV after a few years. We have had them over 10 years now and like them much better. I do believe Dirctv is a little more expensive though. Shoot, we call and ask about the cost of a service or something and they are always giving us free programming or some other service.

BurtonRW,

We went from Dish to UVerse. While we liked the packages it got too expensive so we dropped it. Went to Direct TV, only other choices were to put up an antenna, not a good alternative as we are at least 35-40 miles from the antennas outside Detroit, Flint or Lansing. Or the dreaded Comcast. I inquired of their service and despite the previous owners having Comcast as well as the whole house being prewired by Comcast they wanted to charge me $75 just to initiate service. Told them to pound salt up, well you know the rest of that line. That is when we signed up with Dish Network.

Direct TV has been decent, not overly expensive. Have had zero problems with the hardware unlike Dish. We have had Direct for about three years now. I recommend them highly over Dish.

We had dish at our last house. Dish blew over in the first storm. Not a particularly nasty storm, apparently I had faulty sheathing on the house, my 55 year old house???.... Manager please. Several calls (hours), dish installed correctly, damage repaired.

I've had DirecTV for 20 years. Not many problems at all. They haven't caused me any heartache.

My dad has DISH and I just don't like the programming guide and stuff as well as DirecTVs...

I've had Dish for 13 year, it's been good but CS can be a nightmare!

In the past they tried to bill me for a DVR that went bad telling me I had opened it. Like said above, manager immediately OK'd the return. Another time I was repeatedly lied to by the junior CS reps. I finally got to a person in the US who handled it.

Why does she object to a "traditional" antenna, but not to a DISH antenna. Does she think the dish is not an antenna?

I would hazard to guess that age and the fact that she is the MIL are the issues here. It is a psychological issue apart from logic. When the casinos first came to our area, the free transportation buses were bright pink. Many older male customers refused to ride them because of the color.

The antenna thing... it’s mainly aesthetic. She doesn’t appreciate how sleek modern aerials are compared to the old 80s style mess of metal that used to adorn everyone’s roof in her old neighborhood... when she was a child.

Regardless, the dish won’t be mounted to her roof, which she doesn’t want any holes in. We have a very convenient utility pole and if the tech doesn’t like that, there are plenty of places a pole can go in the ground. One nice thing about having a farm is that the only things around to obstruct line of sight are our own outbuildings and the tree line, neither of which come in to play here.

On DirecTV vs DISH, I did a lot of homework and my default position from researching for my own purposes several years ago was DirecTV. However, I’m reasonably convinced that the balance has shifted. The categories where DirecTV is a little better seem to be things that aren’t relevant to her (NFL Sunday ticket, certain local programming packages, etc.). DISH is fine for her on those counts. The Hopper3 seems to be quite a bit better than the current Genie, and the wireless Joeys, which she’ll need two of, look like they’re good to go.

If DISH really sucks for some reason, I can always switch.

Forget the term manager. They can and will do nothing.
Replace that with; I want to speak with customer retention. They can do almost anything and will often do things you didn't know existed.
When the initial contract runs out tell them you are switching to their competitor. Your price will drop in half, at least for a year.

Here, they will no longer mount on chimney. They want to screw onto roof near the edge. They must be able to mount while standing on a ladder while reaching over to roof. I would not let them screw into my roof. When upgrading, they would have only had to remove old dish from bracket on chimney and attach new upgraded dish. 2nd installer allowed me to do it myself. First wouldn’t and left. Do not let them screw into roof deck! You will eventually have damage from corrosion etc.

I have DTV and, up until recently service has been pretty painless.

The last service call I had to make reveled their newest scam (at least in my area)and luckily my stepson used to work for ATT and warned me in advance.

The tech arrived and was on time, polite and seemed to know his shit but about halfway through he got on his phone and was talking to someone telling them how much longer he would be. When he hung up he told me that was his manager who wanted to stop by and share all the new ATT/DTV products and services they had to offer. I told him to please call his manager back and tell him to absolutely NOT show up and if he did they would be removing my dish and receivers that day.

The tech could tell I was pissed an she called the guy back talking in a very hushed tone but it sound like the manager was pushing him hard. When he hung up I apologized to him and said i knew it was not his fault. He told he hated having to do it and it pissed most people off

Personally, I would let the manager salesman take the time and burn the gas to make the trip, then tell him / her to get off my property, right now.

I have used dish for 20 years. Hit and miss on installers. One will be the guy you’d buy dinner. The next is one you kick off your property. Roll of the dice.

Like prefontaine, I’ve had dish in excess of 20 years. I have had the dish employees do just one installation. He couldn’t figure it out.

I’ve found the key to a non stress relationship with dish is that I now always use a local independent contractor. He is able to call and get answers for anything I need.

We've had DirecTV since 1998, and we have moved several times since then. I've gotten annoyed with some of these so-called installers, so I've just been doing it myself. We have a travel trailer and a portable dish, so I've gotten pretty good at pointing the dish and getting a 90+ signal in a minute or two. It's not all that difficult to do it yourself.

You can go to http://www.dishpointer.com/ and plug in your location, and it provides your elevation and azimuth coordinates. And yes, if you call and complain to the customer retention team, they generally will give you some free service or reduce your bill for 6-12 months. When that time period is over, call back and they will do it again.
