As someone said above....2 words:

Salvation
Army

"If you’re a leader, you lead the way. Not just on the easy ones; you take the tough ones too…” – MAJ Richard D. Winters (1918-2011), E Company, 2nd Battalion, 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101st Airborne

"Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil... Therefore, as tongues of fire lick up straw and as dry grass sinks down in the flames, so their roots will decay and their flowers blow away like dust; for they have rejected the law of the Lord Almighty and spurned the word of the Holy One of Israel." - Isaiah 5:20,24

I once was approached on North Avenue by a guy with the outta gas story. I looked at him a minute and finally said "Dude, seriously, I've heard this three times this week. Entertain me. Tell me a story, a joke or something. I'll pay for the entertainment."

He walked off.

Thanks for posting. I always liked John. He is a very bright guy, and I like his style of indignation. It is also great when you agree with him about gun laws in NYC and panhandling.

I don't respond. Period. Not even a "piss off."

Got approached one morning at a coin-op car wash.
I was on my bike, 02 bagger. Guy comes up to the rear of the stall and starts up with the "bro" routine, something that really pisses me off.

First of all, this clown is not my "bro", two people can call me that without me getting pissed off. I guess that I looked like an easy mark or maybe that he thinks that I'm one of the newer riders and that by calling me bro I will feel like I'm a real biker, part of the "brotherhood".

Been amongst the biker world since 1967 so I think I know a thing or two about it. This guy was a tramp, clear through and through. His story did not hold water, his Panhead was in storage up north. He may have had one at one time in his life but this was not the time in his life.

Anyway, sob story, just got into town the night before, no money, no place to stay and could I help out a "bro" with fifty bucks? Nice try, told him to call 211, help line in mid-Michigan for shelter, food, etc. Not good enough, just needs money.

Told him the police station is just up the street, go there for help. He didn't like my response, said "the bulls always roust me when I get to town". So clearly he has a lot more experience being a bum than a real biker.

The sad part about all of this:

We're all forced to give away our money to similar people. We just don't see them get it.

Out of sight, out of mind.

I don't give money or anything else to panhandlers or beggars. My standard response is along the lines of "No, I have nothing for you, move on." There are plenty of legitimate organizations that I can give money or my time that will really help people in need.

I would rather be considered a hardass than a fool.

I used to pass under a major Houson freeway during my morning commute. Always had panhandlers at each of 4 turn stratigic lanes. Noticed thay always had lawn chairs and coolers. One day, when running late, saw a window van pick them up after rush hour. Over the course of two years I occasionaly saw the team dropped off in the AM or picked up in the PM. It was a well organized operation with little signs advertizing various pity inducing ailments. "Disabled vet" Disabled and need money to feed my children" etc. etc. Apparently, their scam was effective as the window van was pretty nice. At least they went to "work" every day.
