In Oct a Mac laptop was fraudulently purchased from Evine on my USAA credit card. USAA fixed that easily. When I saw the pending purchase I first called Evine. What a mistake, the assholes made a hard inquiry on my credit report. From now on I will only contact the CC issuer & the company can eat the loss!

You can call Equifax and report the fraudulent hard credit pull. Should be easy peasy. The onus is on Evine to provide proof that you consented to the credit pull.

I don't see the point of calling the retailer. It's not like they're just going to cancel the charge and call it all good.

But how could they do a hard inquiry unless they had your social security? You didn't give them your social security number, did you?

"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." A credit freeze is the answer to these problems. Costs nothing and now very easy to do.

I did that in the past, then a couple of years later I was buying an auto & had forgot to take with me all the secret codes & passwords to allow a credit check.
I suppose the fraudster had given my SS number to Evine.

UpDate; after filing a fraud investigation with Equifax I received a notice "inquires are a factual record of access. If you have questions, contact the creditor". In other words "tough shit on you".

The presence of an inquiry is very low on the concerned list....

I still get amazed at how many "worship at the FICO Alter".

Aside from locking my credit...I wouldn't shed a minutes thought on this.

I guess I am a little lost...what effect did the pull have on anything? I am not understanding.

Too many inquiries on ones credit can have an effect on your rating. One, probably not a big deal, but it still can be annoying.

Did you do that online?

You'll need to call and/or mail the dispute for this particular matter. You can remove unauthorized pulls from your report.

Generally a credit bureau inquiry will cost you a couple of points. I would hope you have points to spare. I have a number of credit cards that give me free access to my scores as does one of my banks.
