Wife's teacher friend thinks life stops when going back to work Login/Join

My wife has a friend who is a high school teacher. She made the comment I hope we can get together again before school starts and we fall off the radar.

Honey, we work year round, have kids and still manage to have a life. Poor little you. You have to go back to work after having the summer off. You think every thing comes to screeching stop.

Some of the work related things I hear teachers say, just boggles my mind. Especially when they say they don't get paid enough. Here in South Florida they make more than both the mean and median income of the people paying their salary. They start at $38k a year fresh out of college and can get accredited (fairly easily) in 2 years and make $52k a year and then get a pension as early as 7 years working. And, they seem to forget they only work 175 +/- days a year when a normal person generally works between 250-260 days per year for their salary.

this is one of those "until you've worked a year in their shoes " subjects.

I know of four teachers and a principle's assistant.

From what they share,
It sounds like the job from hell.

15-25 student's are not the problem

dealing with the parents is not the problem

office politics with 30 others is not the problem

paying out of pocket for stuff that should be provided is not the problem

lack of support from people you work for is not the problem

dealing with 7 translators is not the problem

disrespectful kids is not the problem

low or no income kids are not the problem

a.w.o.l. parents is not the problem

state and federal requirements is not the problem.

take home work and week end work is not the problem.

but pick 7 of the above to orchestrate on a daily basis and I would put it up against
firefighters and L.e.o.'s on the stress and tension scale , most days.

the ability to teach effectively is a magnificent talent, it's crying shame and a nail in this country's coffin that they just can't teach

w/o all the other bull shit.

then THEN! there is the ever looming subject of budget cuts ,

Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency.

Neck Ties, Hats and ammo brass, Never ,ever touch'em w/o asking first

Unless you teach, you just don't understand what it is like.
When you get home, do you stay up till 10:00 correcting papers?
Do you have teenagers tell you to go fuck yourself and have your boss tell you "Well they have problems"?
Out of 90 kids, 2 parents can make your life a living hell.
Explain to a parent that their kid did no homework, doesn't participate in class and that no, you won't give their darling a passing grade.
Been out for the evening and have a parent come up to you to talk about their child for an half hour but doesn't come to back to school night or call you, email you all year?
Taught a class where one student gets a 25 on their first quiz while another gets a 97 and have to figure out how to teach the entire class at the same level?
This is just the tip of the iceberg. Teachers ARE underpaid just as are the Law Enforcement Officers that put up with bull crap ever day but you just have to keep your cool and smile.

The teachers that gripe the most about their job are also the ones that are always proudly proclaiming that it’s “not a job, it’s a calling” or a labor of love. We all have problems with work and life. Deal with it or find another line of work but please knock it off with the crying.

Our school district starts new teachers at roughly $35k with a bachelors and $38k with a masters. A teacher with a masters won’t make $52k until year 16. This is of course assuming a step is given every year. Can you provide data supporting your claims? Just seems a bit off from what I’ve seen. I realize all states are different, but that much is odd.

I can tell you from experience, most teachers put in more hours, day in and day out, then a lot of other professions. My wife, a teacher for 21 years now (15 in the public schools) is sitting next to me as I type this on a Saturday afternoon grading papers. She will spend an hour or two each evening grading, documenting behaviors, lesson planning or any other number of tasks. Sure she is off for the summer (closer to 2 months rather than 3), but she most certainly puts in a full year of work during her contracted (and really before and after) school year.

I have never been a teacher and never plan on being one. $38k is shit pay for all that is expected of you. I wouldn’t even do it for $52k to have to deal with this generation of shithead parents and kids. No way.

At one time I thought that I would really like to teach math and physical sciences.

The woman I was dating at the time did not think that was a good idea. She arranged a dinner with the Superintendent of Schools who was a friend of hers. He quickly talked me out of the idea.

I'm 58 years old. I'm a former LEO, but I'm also a teacher. I teach high school Physical Science and Earth and Space Science. This is my 28th year. Nobody looks more toward to Summer, or to the new school year than I do. Currently, we're having to break in 2 new assistant principals that want to 'recreate the wheel'.

I was paid $7.54/HR to go into harm's way so you didn't have to.

Different views of life:

I would never assume that someone else had a cushy job unless I had actually worked it myself, and then only if the other person had the same skills, abilities, and knowledge that I did. If that job is so nice, have you applied for it yourself? If you applied and were turned down, why was that?

I wouldn’t seriously bitch about how bad my own job was unless I was performing forced labor in the gulag or was a military conscript. We may not have the practical ability to change things today, but the vast majority of us had the opportunity to make choices at some point.

I have no problem with teachers being well paid. Or being off in the summer.
But I want an actual, functional education for my kid and not SJW indoctrination.

I know your pain...Two of our division directions this year are new, as is our assistant head of school--plus, we're searching for a new head this year. And we've been through 3 upper school directors in 3 years: one died suddenly and her replacement left because of cancer.

My arguments with teacher friends usually go like this.

Teacher: teaching is the hardest job on Earth.
Me: how is that? You only work 3/4 of a regular workers year yet get paid a full salary.

Teacher: but I put in so many extra hours.
Me: yeah in the corporate world that's called normal and we do it 240 days of the year. I can't remember a job past entry level where I worked 40 hrs a week.

Teacher: well you don't understand what it's like to deal with 20 kids at a time.
Me: you don't know what it's like to deal with 200 customers and a company that expects you to contribute to a bottom line. Your pay and finances come from every constituent in the tax base. Mine comes from me and my colleagues selling shit and meeting demands.

Teacher: well if you think teaching is so easy you could have done it.
Me: if you think it sucks so bad why do you do it?

I had Nuns for 8 years of grammar school. Took my share of being slapped, taken out my seat by my hair. All in all they weren't too bad, nothing I didn't deserve. In high school I had The Christian Brothers of Ireland. They were some mean men.

I have no sympathy for teachers. They make their bed on this.

The state legislature assists the school board on building an empire. It's all money, money, money, money. The teachers keep their mouths shut as long as the cash continues to come in.

Instead of voting for charter schools to fix the problems, they don't want to lose money so they lobby against them viciously.

Student causing a problem? No problem. They will not expel them. Threaten to shoot up a school? Twice? No problem. We'll make arrangements for you to get your education. If they expel students, they lose federal funding. So, safety in our schools are important (as long as it doesn't cost the district money).

The latest thing is that the districts need more money for "safety". Ours won't let the school police be the police. But, they need more money, you see. It comes in under the guise of safety, and goes to other things.

Have a principal that covers up students sexually assaulting other students? Not a problem. You pay off the prosecutor, and then you promote the principle to assistant superintendent.

All the while, the teachers remain silent and keep cashing the checks. The pension system is on life support. One of the biggest boons are the teachers. And they will not give up anything to try to keep the pension system alive. They have sick outs to go to the capitol and protest. Not a problem, either. Fuck all of those parents who expect their kids to actually be in school those days and get an education.

There are two organizations that I despise. One is Kentucky public education and the other are people that defend it.
