Maybe it's just me but I feel sorry for the two children that this woman and a couple of boyfriends sired

Imagine being born into that mess with self centered, dimwitted idiots as your parents and having no say whatsoever. It's not like these children screamed from the uterus, "hey mom get drunk, and high and have unprotected sex with the first piece of felonious scum you can find in the next hour, so that I can be born into a world of neglect, poverty, and diminished possibilities." Talk about being born with two strikes.

In other words I don't mind the slut and her criminal sperm donor taking hits on the board. However calling children, who didn't asked to be born, "bastards" seems cruel to me.

Just my 2 cents.

Dave

To her, it's probably a big deal. It IS something to be proud of; bringing new life into the world. Of course, it would be better if she had a good job or supporting husband and we didn't have to pay for the kid but that just isn't going to happen with some people.

When I was younger and less world-wise, somebody was bragging about her ultrasound photos. I looked at it and said it looked like something out of "Alien". She took offense at this comment, for some reason. Eh, I didn't care - she was a complete stranger.

I think your right but it is what it is.

Reality can sometimes be cruel:

Bastard

Pronunciation:
\ˈbas-tərd\
Function:
noun
Etymology:
Middle English, from Anglo-French, probably of Germanic origin; akin to OldFrisian bost marriage, Old English bindan to bind
Date:
14th century

1: an illegitimate child

2: something that is spurious, irregular, inferior, or of questionable origin

3 a: an offensive or disagreeable person —used as a generalized term of abuse

b: man, fellow
— bas·tard·ly adjective

Parallel,

Just because reality can be cruel doesn't mean we need to be. The lives of those children, who once again had no say in their being born, will be filled with enough misery. We certainly don't need to add any more.

I would suggest that the book that should guide us in the treatment of these children is the Bible. I would prefer the judgement of G-d's grace over that of Merriam Webster.

Best,
Dave

But this isn't about the children.
It's about irresponsible adults.
Just how hard is it to use birth control?
I'm 42 and knew what caused them.

So this is how liberty dies... with thunderous applause.

I was merely pointing out that the word is appropriately used in this context. It would be a different thing if we were using pejorative slang towards these children, but the reality is that we are not. Also, I don't think that any here would call these kids bastards while they were present so it seems to me that your reaction is in fact an overreaction.

If only there were a safe way to get birth control into the water.

And make the antidote expensive enough to keep the destitute from breeding themselves larger welfare checks.

Parallel,

I'll take the gig on that. I don't have an internet persona. If I say something in cyberspace, I say it in real space. It would never occur to me to refer to these children as bastards on line if I wasn't prepared to use the term face to face with them or their "parents." I apologize for that lapse in internet etiquette.

Best,
Dave

Dave, your heart was obviously in the right place and there is certainly no need to apologize for sticking up for children. While accusing you of an overreaction it is now obvious to me that it is I who is guilty.

Just because the word is being used in context doesn't change the fact that the word is used in a derogatory fashion and is considered an insult.

When I worked in a warehouse one summer in college, one of the "workers" there was pregnant (IIRC around 19 years old.). When someone asked if she and her boyfriend/baby daddy were getting married she responded with "Oh no! We're not ready for that yet!" Roll Eyes

The mind boggles.

Devolution...

Smart, successful people are having fewer kids and having them later in life (late 20s, early to mid 30s).

People who's aspirations in life involve being the Customer Service Manager at Wal-Mart are having kids in their teens and early 20s.

The ones who have them later in life can send their 1 or 2 kids to better schools, pay more attention to them, and pay for at least part of their college. Their children, most likely, will follow in their parents footsteps of being successful and educated.

The ones who have them early in life don't have the maturity, experience, or finances to be good parents. What kind of kids will they raise? That's right, ones who have their kids when they're 17 or 18.

It's a vicious cycle that the successful people are losing since they statistically have a fertility rate of less than 2. The same can't be said for the others...

If you think gun magazines are objective or honest, when's the last time they wrote a truly negative review of a firearm? Do you really think all of those pre-production models they're shooting run as reliably and shoot as accurately as they say they do?

90% of gun malfunctions can be attributed to poor ammo (reloads, Russian, etc.), lack of maintenance, weak springs, cheap magazines, or improper technique. When a well-trained shooter using a wide variety of high quality ammunition fed from a reliable, self-leveling magazine shoots your gun after it's gone through a through inspection, spring replacement, and cleaning, and still has problems, then it's the gun. Until then, the problem is YOU.

The word means what it means. Any emotional drama people attach to it is their problem. It's not like illegitimacy carries a stigma these days.

I wonder what % of kids born in the US today are legitimate.

That's a good question. My wife's great grandfather used to proudly show people his birth certificate. Stamped on it, in BRIGHT RED in 3" letters...LEGITIMATE!
