You can probably chalk this one up as "You know you're getting old when..." but here's my beef.

It seems everywhere I go these days, hotel lobbies, restaurants, elevators, etc., the background music being played is from that catalogue known laughingly as "classic rock."

Really?

As overplayed as these 200+ songs are, is it really appropriated to be hearing "Stairway to Heaven" while checking in to a hotel? Or "Sympathy For The Devil" while seated in a casual dining restaurant?

What ever happened to good, old "Muzak?" You, know, that Mantovani Orchestra or 101 Strings stuff that was an able substitute for white noise?

It seems everywhere we go these days we are bombarded with stuff that used to be decent, rockin' music. Have we become so enured to creativity that we just pump out the stuff 24x7?

You can't truly call yourself "peaceful" unless you are capable of great violence. If you're not capable of great violence, you're not peaceful, you're harmless.

My favorite saying: you know you are old when you figure out the Muzak that is playing is actually Stairway to Heaven.

Sometimes you can complain and they will change the music. High end players at the Casino get whatever music they want.

Kmart has the worst ever. Not classic rock but worst songs ever. Bad rap, jingle bell rock in July. It serves to get you out of the store quickly. The store manager tells me that it is controlled by corporate. The only reason I go to the place is that it is within a block of my office and is convenient.

I've recently heard Metallica in an elevator... and both Poison and Guns 'n Roses on separate "easy listening" stations... big time "what the...?" moments.

When I hear muzak, my teeth hurt.

And I hear drills.

Around here it all seems to be '70s music and the snoozy slow crap they choreograph now.

Hearing Metallica in an elevator is normal. The junk they've played on the Load album and everything after that really didn't do much.

It wasn't new Metallica though. It was "To Live is to Die" from And Justice...just, Muzakified. It took me a bit to place it then it clicked.

I heard don't fear the reaper muzak in a hospital elevator once. My Wife didn't get why I couldn't stop laughing hysterically.

What?!?

Situation awareness is defined as a continuous extraction of environmental information, integration of this information with previous knowledge to form a coherent mental picture in directing further perception and anticipating future events. Simply put, situational awareness mean knowing what is going on around you.

How adorable. He can still hear background music. In restaurants I usually give my hearing aid speaker to my wife. That way we can still talk.

I was in the local grocery on the shores of Lake Tahoe the other day and heard music playing on the overhead. Couldn't quite catch it; then I heard "tailgate" and "dirt road." Yes, it was the dreaded "Bro-Country." I dropped my items in the aisle and ran out the door holding my ears and screaming "MAKE IT STOP! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD MAKE IT STOP!"
