Only you can answer that. It's for no other purpose than to give it more "bling".

I've done it on some of mine. If you buy a stainless guide rod, the polished barrel will look more at home. You should know what you're doing if you decide to DIY.

When you say "polish" I think of reducing the dimensions, if even by minute amounts with different buffing compounds/pads on a buffing machine. That could effect performance and reliability. Maybe you mean just removing the bluing (with vinegar) and leaving the natural finish or lightly polishing by hand. Using vinegar to remove the factory finish can harm the barrel bore if left in solution for to long. Neutralize/clean and lubricate the bore thoroughly if that's your manner to remove the factory finish.

If you decide to remove the factory barrel finish, the smilies will still be there, but harder to see. You'll need to keep it well lubed (unless it's stainless) to avoid any hint of corrosion.

would polishing the feed ramp be a good idea?

If the feed ramp is smooth...void of any obvious machining marks, scratches, gouges, etc, it's not really necessary. Stay out of the chamber if you do it.

But, light polishing won't hurt anything if you use a metal polish (I like WENOL) on a swab or cloth wrapped around your finger. It's really more for the "bling" effect. It'll soon get scarfed up with repeated loadings anyway.

Some use a DREMEL, rouge and small buffing wheel. While it's unlikely to happen, be very careful not to remove any metal or reshape the contours of the ramp if you elect to use a machine, especially a machine with high rpm capabilities.

Perhaps I just old-fashioned, but I see no reason to muck about with a perfectly good, correctly functioning firearm. To me the possibility of removing too much material, increasing the liklihood of rusting/wear from removing the bluing, and the overall un-necessariness of polishing the barrel more than outweighs any aesthetic "improvement" that might result.

Having a barrel refinished after lots of wear, or to match a two-tone refinishing (a'la Robar or CCR) is reasonable, but to monkey around with a gun that works fine to increase how much it reflects light seems ill-advised to me. It may also reduce its trade-in/resale value.

However, that's just my opinion, and lots of people do it and appear happy with the results.

As for polishing the feed ramp, if you are not having feeding problems, then why would it be necessary?

Either way, your call.

To remove bluing you don't need to really polish the barrel.... You can dunk it in some white vinegar for 20 min and it just wipes off. This way you won't change the physical size of the barrel. Bar-Sto does not blue their after market barrels and they never have problems just keep it lubed and there is no issues

there problem solved

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the BARSTO barrels all stainless whereas the SIG barrels are not?

Bruce,
can you tell us why? I'm interested to know what it does or doesn't do when you polish the barrel

Thanks MW22...

One would be corrosion resistant, Which Most keep grease or on on the barrel any way. The other is that you may get a loose fitting barrel to side if it was bare minimum for the lockup.
