I was going to disassemble my 226 when I noticed that the takedown pin and firing pin crosspin are stuck. I bent my brass punch trying to get the latter out. I know the crosspin goes from right to left, but I could not get it to budge. I sprayed CLP on the exterior of the pins and stuck the frame and slide in the freezer hoping to shrink the pins a bit. I know this is the first disassembly and everything is tight, but I have never seen pins bend a punch. What's going on?

I have no idea what the "take down pin" is. What model 226 do you have? Stainless or carbon steel slide (two roll pins or one solid pin in the slide)?
Roll pins are more easily removed, but should be pushed out with a 1/8" roll pin punch. I've only seen these punches made of steel. Direction of removal or installation doesn't matter. The solid firing pin positioning pin in the stainless slides requires a 3mm cup tip punch. Best to start with a short "starter" punch and finish removal with a standard length punch. This pin only comes out the left side of the slide and is installed from left to right. Many people have wasted a lot of steel punches trying to get the fppp out; some move easier than others. __________________ Alumnus, Eighth Army and the First Infantry Division |

It is a stainless slide with Nitron finish
Model 226 .40 cal SCT I meant the take down lever, it won't come out Where do I get a cup tip punch? Is it part of the Sig armorers kit? I have the tool, but I don't think a cup tip punch is one of the four bits in the tool. |

The takedown lever is not punched out. There is a slot in the lever that is interfacing with the slide catch lever spring. All that is needed with the takedown lever is to rotate the lever with some pressure on the side opposite the lever. In normal circumstances you should never need more than moderate pressure. I believe that Top Gun Supply is selling the cup tip punches. |

More important than punches is obtaining instruction on how to disassemble the gun properly. Top Gun Supply sells the SIG armorer DVD in addition to tools. “Most men … can seldom accept the simplest and most obvious truth if it … would oblige them to admit the falsity of conclusions which they have proudly taught to others, and which they have woven, thread by thread, into the fabrics of their lives.” — Leo Tolstoy |

As mentioned, Top Gun Supply sells a great set of 3mm cup tip punches. These punches are not part of the armorer's tool. Please don't take offense, but I infer from your posts that you're not prepared to disassemble a SIG. Regardless, good luck __________________ Alumnus, Eighth Army and the First Infantry Division |

No offense taken. I wish I had the time to study firearm structure and function, but instead I must study that which leads me to my 6-figure career as a Pharmacist.
I do have the AGI Sig DVD and I did watch it. I do not recall Robert Dunlap mentioning a special punch for the fppp. In addition, I DID try to push the takedown lever out by hand first. Yes, I'm a neophyte, do I need to wear a badge or something? If if would have got the fppp out, I would have been fine, the Sig is not in the least bit complicated in design or function. I just didn't know about he cup-punch and was worried that the takedown lever was stuck. Give me a break, guys. I am not as familiar with firearm disassemly as you all. When I first started Organic Chemistry, I could not even think of drawing 1-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)- N-methylpropan-2-amine. Now, it's cake. Let me get the cup-punch and try again. If I don't succeed on the 2nd try, then you all can crack on me. Thanks for the info. Michael |

The general rule is if you don't have to remove the fppp, than don't. It is a one time use pin and is pressed in tight. It will take a lot of effort to remove it and than it is the factory's recommendation that you replace it with a new one. Getting a new one in is just as difficult. Models with roll pins are a little different story. The Take Down Lever is taken out by turning the lever counter-clockwise while pressing on the right end of the lever. I don't know where you grew up, but where I come from, it's very poor manners to mention what you want people to believe you make. |

Thanks for the help. Sorry if I was rude, I have a bad habit of wanting to take everything apart to see how it works, even if I don't have the time, and I get frustrated. I'm going to just enjoy shooting my 226 for now. As the saying goes, "if it aint broke, don't fix it". It's a damn good firearm and it doesn't need me messing with it anyway.
