226/229 .40 mags
Are they interchangeable?

I had original P226, 1980's vintage, mags that I carried as spares for my P229, same vintage. They functioned fine but extended a little beyond the bottom of the grip.

With the introduction of the P229-1, I don't think the -1 and original mags are interchangeable.

All P226 magazines are narrower than 357/40 P229 magazines. A P226 mag will normally lock into the magwell of a 357/40 P229, but it will be a loose side to side fit. The people who have tried using them like that report that everything usually functions fine, but other than using them in an emergency when the proper magazines aren’t available or to save a few dollars, there’s nothing to recommend the practice.

^^^ Says it all.

My P226 (2010) .40 mags functioned fine in my P229 (1996) .40. Tried it several years ago just out of curiosity.

The profile of the 229 and 226 mags is different!! Be careful I saw someone try 226 9mm mags in a 229 9mm did not go so well.

I was concerned if the 229 .40/.357 would fit in the 226.

Your original question wasn’t asked like that, so to summarize for anyone who might still be wondering, a 357/40 P229 magazine is too wide to fit into a P226, and would be too short to lock into the magwell if it did.

The 226 magazines will fit the 229.

The 229 magazines will not fit in the 226.

The question, though is why?

A factory 226 .40 magazine fits 12 rounds; a factory 229 .40 magazine fits 12 rounds.

There is no advantage to putting a 226 magazine in your 229 other than maybe a more positive insertion because the 226 magazine sticks out a bit more.

The same is not true on a 228 or 9mm 229 because the 226 mags fit and, at full capacity, hold more rounds. But in .40? Why?

The 226 .40 and 226 9mm mags have the same size specs, save the feed lip width. 229 mags are slightly fatter with a double taper down to the feed lips to facilitate smooth feeding. The extra width allows the 229 mags to accommodate the same number of rounds due to a more efficient use of internal space. 226 mags in a 229 are noticeable looser and more rattily.
