Fitting 1911 recoil spring guide rod? Login/Join

I picked up an old Springfield MC Operator a few weeks ago. It is used, but in pretty good shape.
Unknown to me at the time this is the "rare" straight rail version.
Anyway, I'd like to replace the recoil spring guide rod. The original is kind of chewed up.
Not interested in anything but a G.I. style.
I bought a Wilson bullet proof part from Brownells.
It interferes with the slide.
What is the "proper" way to fit this part?
Does it need to stay round?
Is there a preferred clearance between it and the slide?
I've been googling for days and haven't found anything helpful.

Does it fit into the frame correctly? If I understand you correctly, the head may need to be reduced slightly with a file. (This is not something I've ever encountered...)

It drops into the frame just fine.
It contacts the slide before it sits on the barrel, if that makes any sense.

I may be looking at the wrong interface as well.
I was assuming that recoil spring guide rod should have the same barrel contact as the original. Maybe that doesn't matter?

As long as it contacts the barrel and doesn't interfere with function, I would think you're good to go.

With the slide sights down on the table, should the concave part of the recoil guide rod sit on the barrel? The Wilson is not sitting on the barrel, whereas the SA part does.

Yes. Sounds like a little material needs to be removed from the Wilson.
