Thought I would give this a try, anybody use one? Directions don't mention anything about soaking solvent into the boresnake, so do you run it through "dry", and then just lube? Would appreciate any comments and help.

You can put some solvent on the very front end of the thing, but I'm not sure that it will do much good as it's passing through so quickly.
I only use one for my Mini-14 (IMO waste of time/money on pistol barrels) and wet the barrel first with a couple passes of solvent soaked patches then let the solvent work before the boresnake pass.
Why would they be a waste of time/money on a pistol barrel, but not a rifle barrel? A pistol barrel will receive the exact same amount of cleaning surface contact of a boresnake as a long rifle barrel with the equivilent length boresnake. Or maybe you mean that pistol barrels tend to just be easier to clean than a rifle; in which I would agree, but even a compact pistol rod and brush set takes up much more room and weight in a shooting bag than a wrapped-up boresnake.
True that a boresnake does not replace a proper rod and brush cleaning, but for quick work and transport convenience, it beats the hell out of rods. I think they are worth it.
In regard to OP questions: You can just run them through dry, or presoak th einside of the barrel with some cleaner for a few mintues, then run the boresnake. To clean them, just chuck it in the clothes washer.

My "waste of time/money" comment wrt pistol barrels is that it's so much easier to plug the muzzle end, fill with Hoppes and give it some time to work, run a few patches through and walk away with a completely clean barrel. If I could figure a way to do that with my Mini (without all the Hoppes running out the gas port ) I would as well.
For any immediate range work (which I rarely do) I carry an "official" Sig portable pistol kit from CDNN. It's about the size of a 50 BMG shell and holds everything (rod extensions, brush, jag, patches and even a small bottle of Hoppes) in the hollow handle. Much neater to carry around in the range bag IMO.

I toss mine in a plastic gallon milk jug, add a little laundry soap, hot water, and shake well. I let them soak for 10/15 minutes and then rinse with cold water. Final step is either hang dry or toss in the dryer inside a small zippered bag.
^^ Laundry detergent is OK, but if you keep any Dawn hand dishwashing soap around I've found that's even better. It's a really good grease cutter. Supposedly, it's the dometic version of stuff the clean-up folks use to get spilled crude oil off the furry or feathered critters that get in the way.
