Red recoil spring for P229 in 40?
Just picked up this Sig parts kit for a newly acquired P229 police trade in. Upon opening the pack I noticed the recoil spring was red instead of the normal blue. Has there been a change in recoil spring colors?

Might be worth a call to Sig to get an asswer on that.

Top Gun Supply is showing a blue spring for 229 40/357.

They show a red spring, but lists it for a P220R3, whatever that is.

The red colored spring is for the P220 Compact.

I purchased the parts kit from Midway. I'm wondering if it should contact them or Sig Customer service for the proper spring.

Contact Sig and ask them about the spring you received. (And let us know what they say!)

The P220 .45 and P226 .40/.357 share the same spring, so it isn't impossible that the P220 compact .45 and P229 .40/.357 could use the same spring, so perhaps there has been a recent switch.

Finally got in touch with a Sig customer service rep. They stated that an blue spring should have been in the package and not the red spring. However, they wont ship out a new spring. I have to go through Midway USA and see about getting the item exchanged.

The exchange with Midway was quick and painless. They are a wonderful company to do business with. However, I was sent another 229/40 SW parts kit with another red recoil spring.

I brought up this scenario while I was initially on the phone with Sig customer service. I told them that it seems unlikely that only one bag would have this mistake. What should I do if I receive my package from Midway and it contains another red recoil spring? The CS rep responded that I should call them to notify them, but they would not be able to send out a replacement spring because I didn't buy the kit direct from them.

I will give them a call again to resolve this issue but at this point it might be less hassle just to purchase the blue recoil spring and be done with it.

Talked with SIG CS this morning. They stated that different colored springs will often go into LE contract weapons. Any parts left over after the contract gun has been fulfilled might go into commercial parts kits. However he wasn't exactly sure if this was the case in my situation but it was happened in the past. Regardless, they are sending out the proper recoil spring.

Sorry for the multiple updates but I hate when threads are started about an issue and a resolution is never posted.

Thanks much for the update. It’s good to know that not all SIG reps are total idiots (or if it was the same one, that he/she came to his/her senses).

I have been using the red recoil spring, intended for the P220 Carry, in my P229 with both my 40 cal barrel and the 357 cal barrel. There has never been a FTF/FTE with the heavier spring. I actually like the "felt" recoil of the heavier spring. Furthermore, I use the P229 blue spring, intended for 40/357 cal, in my M11-A1. I typically use +p ammo in my M11-A1 so of course no issues with the heavier spring in the M11-A1.

Interesting; thanks for that information.
And welcome to the forum, but nothing to post before? Wink

at one point they actually went from blue to purple and the change addressed the issue of center strand protrusion.

I forgot to update this thread months ago. Sig finally sent out a recoil spring. Now I have a yellow spring. I haven't tried it yet, but the red spring did cause some failures to eject with lightly loaded 180gr ammo.

Yellow spring? Interesting.
Thanks for the update.

The yellow .40/.357 Sig spring is designated "For ICE use only"

I ran across that while spring shopping for my P229/40.

I'm curious as to what ICE dispenses from their P229's that requires a different spring.

I'll add a link...

Heavier or lighter than stock blue springs?
