never hurts to try![]() |
I have a set of Kim Ahrends wood grips that I really like. I want to put them on my SA Operator with ambi-safety. Has anyone ever notched standard wood grips to accommodate ambi-safety and how tough a job is it. My plan, for now, is to go at it with a vise and a Dremel. But I am certainly open to any help that anyone can offer.

I seem to remember reading in a gun mag someone discussing cutting away some of the grip to accomodate an ambi safety using a dremel. Since I have neever done it I do not know how simple a job it would be. If the gun is a carry gun and you use a chemical degreaser to clean it, I would not put on the Ahrends grips. They do not stand up to chemical degreasers. I found out the hard way.

Well, I feel even dumber than usual! When I took the grips from the package there is the slightest of indentations inside the top of the right grip that allows the flat flange of the right safety to slide under the grip. That solves a problem that I never really had.
P.S. The grips look great. ________________________________________________ I am in the prime of senility. |

Good to hear! I did a set the slow and painful way with a sharp knife, slowly scraping away at it until it fit perfectly with my ambi safety. A dremel could have been quicker, much faster to complete, but I wanted to ensure that I didn't cut away too much, or crack through the grips.
It's pretty easy to make the cut to allow the right side safety. -Richard |

I've done it a few times. First mark the edge of the grip with a fine marker pen as to where the cut out starts and stops in relation to up and down of the paddle hold down lever. Then I clamp my dremel in my vice pointed up with a round bit that has angled teeth on it. It has the teeth on the sides and on the flat end of the bit. I then hold the grip horizontally and bring it towards the bit alittle at a time until I get the cut I want.
When it's done it looks like the factory cut. |
