Max has retired at age 69
He goes shooting four times a year.
he has 3 revolvers , 3 semi auto pistols
a semi auto rifle , a bolt action and a pump .22,

he has a .20 gauge ,a .12 ga. and a .410 .

he wants to purchase some more of each ,
but

he has made space in his basement for a cleaning/ work bench specifically for his guns.

He won't be building guns from scratch, milling parts or welding stuff.

Am posting to see what $500.00 will do in the way of basic introductory tools.

He has a bench , lights and a magnifier

Tier 1:
  • A good cleaning stand for long guns.
  • A couple of bench mats/pads for short guns. Good for both disassembly (to help prevent losing parts) and cleaning.
  • A selection of caliber- and length-appropriate cleaning rods, jags, brushes, patches.
  • Good cleaning solvent(s) and grease/oil.
  • A good set of hollow-ground flat blade screwdrivers.
  • A set of Allen wrenches, metric and SAE.
  • Probably a set of Torx drivers, more and more gun stuff seems to be going that route.
  • A tube of blue Loctite.
  • Plenty of shop towels.
Tier 2:
  • A set of pin punches.
  • A set of roll pin punches.
  • A small plastic- or brass-faced hammer.
  • A leveling tool for mounting rifle scopes, and maybe a boresighter.

A set of picks is a good idea. Very helpful for getting into tight places, hook for removing springs, etc.

I have a Tipton Gun Vise. I'm not a gunsmith, but this vise has served me very well. It will hold pistols, my AR, shotguns, whatever pretty much.

You an usually find it on sale for about $99 or so. You don't have to buy it from the manufacturer.

*******RIGHT NOW Amazon has it on a smokin' good sale price for $49.43 with free shipping. Anyone who doesn't have one should pull the trigger (pun intended) on buying today.********
