Believe me the move is not by choice. I thought I was safe when I left N.Y. 15 years ago. Health issues may require the Mrs. and I to relocate. May not happen but that could change in a heartbeat. If it does happen it could be temporary. I do appreciate the advice given thus far.

What about conventional rifles and shotguns?

I've been out of that hell-hole for 10+ years, but those should be good to go. Used to be, however, that hunting with either was restricted to northern tier vs. southern tier.

"Conventional" may not be defined in any way that makes sense to you.
Benelli M1? Not okay, as it's a semi-auto shotgun with a pistol grip.
Any rifle with a muzzle brake or flash hider? Not sure and most government officials won't know or be able to cite the law and say for sure.

Find another location or leave your guns somewhere else, if it's a temporary move.
I don't even like visiting family there, anymore.

Luck,

Bruce

"The designer of the gun had clearly not been instructed to beat about the bush. 'Make it evil,' he'd been told. 'Make it totally clear that this gun has a right end and a wrong end. Make it totally clear to anyone standing at the wrong end that things are going badly for them. If that means sticking all sort of spikes and prongs and blackened bits all over it then so be it. This is not a gun for hanging over the fireplace or sticking in the umbrella stand, it is a gun for going out and making people miserable with." -Douglas Adams

“It is just as difficult and dangerous to try to free a people that wants to remain servile as it is to try to enslave a people that wants to remain free."
-Niccolo Machiavelli

The trouble with fighting for human freedom is that one spends most of one's time defending scoundrels. For it is against scoundrels that oppressive laws are first aimed, and oppression must be stopped at the beginning if it is to be stopped at all. -Mencken

I believe that's one they left out of the Safe Act. (even though it was a no go before)

Yea, I'm still amazed they let that one slip by.

I live on LI as well. I went to college at SUNY Oswego over 20 years ago. Never had a problem shooting and had a lot of friends with carry permits. I currently have a full carry as I own a business. Was it a pain in the ass to get, yes, but I was able to get it. As long as you are a law abiding citizen you can get permit but unless you own a business my guess will be a premise and to and from the range permit. Enjoy the lake effect snow!!! I once had to identify my car by what I had hanging off of the radio antenna.

It’s very hard to get an unrestricted pistol permit in NewYohkistan. The best you can hope for is restricted license. In some parts of the state you wait up to 1.5-2 years for a license. Good luck.

Typical wait for pistol license in central NYS is less than 3 months. Many people are able to obtain an unrestricted license after taking a course that covers safe use and storage as well as the use of force according to NYS penal law and then Writing to the county Judge. The individual counties issue the licenses. It will never be Arizona, but it's far from impossible.

This is simply not true in Upstate NY. Everyone I know that has applied for one has an unrestricted pistol permit and the process took less than a year.

I lived in Lakewood NY area for about seven years. (Oswego is in a different county).

I had concealed permits previously in other states and applied for one in Mayville NY for Chautauqua County.

It took about six months to get the permit approved (and I was told that a good bit of that time was because their fax system was down for some time). At that time they only had one permit clerk but I have been told that they hired more since.

Sheriff Gerace (looks like he’s still in office) and the approving judge’s offices were great folks to deal with. I recommend if you are in NY to get a PA non-resident after you get your “home” NY permit (requirement).

Don't know if it still being done, but the Jamestown Walmart had started some strange habits when you bought ammo. (Asking if the ammo was for a "pistol" caliber in which case they would ask to see your permit. One guncounter clerk told me they were told to refuse a sale of pistol caliber ammo if you didn't have a pistol permit. Dunno if this was a real policy, as it was inconsistent).
Most people generally drove across the border to PA and bought ammo at the Warren PA Walmart, which also actually had guns in stock. Erie PA isn't far away either.

We left NY in 2013, the year Gov Cuomo instituted his midnight "safe" act.

My Restricted Permit took 214 days to be issued in Tioga County. Then I took the course and applied for my unrestricted. The total process cost $200 +/- and took nearly a year.

Your bolt and lever action rifles should not be a problem. Leave handguns elsewhere until you get a permit, as you have no other legal choice.

Consider investing in snowmobile.

PS. Texas concealed carry permit also set me back over $200 and is only valid for 5 years.

PPS. Both VT & my home state PA are under threat from gun grabbers. Two of the best states for gun laws may fall victim to Progressivism.

It is not that big of a deal unless you are used to buying and walking out without a permit. It does vary county to county though. I used to be able to get a new pistol same day after having a permit but now it takes a judge signing off so it takes 2-3 weeks. My Conceal carry permit took about 4 months to get (NY does not have open carry). All of these delays are due to the backlog much more than a desire to prevent permits being issued. Long guns are just the background check and out the door. NY is much more stringent about out of state travelers than about issuing NY permits, I know a lot of folks that got full carry no issue. There are restrictions on mags but the biggest pain about that is when you want to buy a internet gun and it is not compliant. Send your stuff to a FFL until you are set up. Again it's not that big a deal, I certainly would not choose to or not to live here because of it, but the cold is another issue.

Don't want to rain on anyones parade, but screw every thing New York except, their pizza, pushcart hot dogs, Italian sausage sandwiches, and ??????? Can't think of anything else worthwhile in New York or any of the other socialist states in the northeast.

Well the pizza is pretty amazing and I eat a lot more pizza than I draw my gun but wouldn't choose where I live over either.

Although I lived in central NY and got my unrestricted license in Herkimer county in less than three weeks later on they stopped issuing unrestricted licenses. I'm much happier in NH where no license is required to carry. Not to mention no sales tax or state income tax.
