I was thinking about getting a C&R license incase I decide to buy any more WW2 rifles in the future. The $30 fee for the license is certainly cheaper than my FFL's $60 transfer fee.
Now I was speaking to a guy a couple of weeks ago and he said the ATF visited him and checked his log books. I know when you apply for your C&R you waive the right for them to have a warrant. I was wondering if you guys get many visits. I have nothing to hide or anything if they did come by, just curious on how regular their visits are. |

I am not sure about the C&R licenses specifically, but having and FFL does not waive your privacy rights. The ATF may be able to demand your log books, but they cannot just come on to your property and search you without probably cause.

this past weekend I talked to the Middle TN ATF supervisor regarding some paperwork issues and the subject of C&R audits came up. Well, he just laughed and said that they're so far behind with FFL's that they're not worried about the C&R folks. I have only heard of a couple cases where they asked to see a C&R's log books so the chances of ever being audited are extremely low. If you collect C&R weapons the benefits far exceed any worries about the BATF. It'll be the best $30 you could spend so go for it.

BTW, a C&R license is the best $30 you can spend. Once you get it, register as a dealer with Brownells, Midway, etc, and you will get the dealer discount. It can be quite significant depending on what you're buying.

Interesting stuff thanks. I just hope they have the application forms in stock. I applied about a week ago and hear it takes 2-3 weeks to receive them.
A guy on calguns said he got a repsonse back from ATF saying that they are out of forms and they are on backorder until further notice. |

Never had them visit in about 5 years.
They have the right to inspect your log book and collection once per year. They can do this at the address on the license or you can take it all down to your local ATF office. 18 USC 923(g)(1)(B)

I have never heard of anyone with a C&R getting a visit. I know I never have. Now if your into other illegal activities all bets are off.
As I understand it they can not just search your house without a valid warrant and having a C&R licenses is not reason to obtain one on it's own. They can ask to inspect your weapons and your logs but again I have never heard of that happening. Now this inspection doesn't have to happen at your home. You could ask them to met you at your lawyers office if you choose. They are not going to come banging on your door for simply having a C&R. |

Not many C&R holders know this. Great post. |
