OK, I'll try to explain shortly what's happen in FRANCE ABOUT GUNS LAWS (with my poor english... sorry) :

Abstract :

It's absolutely forbidden in France to have end carry a gun without a good professional reason (Police, Army, Secret Service, Cash carriers, customs services, etc.).

Gun are classified in 2 categories : 1st and 4th. Holding and possession both is forbidden without special agreement.

1st category :
War weapons (so, guns...), specially
- guns and rifles built for the war
- all automatic weapons (all calibers and destinations)
- night riflescopes
- all arms forecasted for army forces.
For example, all 9mm para (my SIG p228 !) and .45 SA pistols are in 1st category.

4th category :
A. Guns :
- weapons non included in 1st category,
- SA pistols with caliber lower than 7,65 mm (.32) and revolver don't fired rounds classified in 1st category (.357, .44, .40, .38sp, etc.)

B. Rifles
- Rifles <80cm length or barrel's length < 45 cm,
- SA weapons can fire up to 3 rounds (3 ont the magazine, 1 into barrel),
- Bolt-action rifles with box magazines may contain up to 10 cartridges
- Shotguns

So, if you are civilian guy (like me) and you want to hold these weapons and guns, you must be a shooting club's member and have an special agreement (your paper came back lower than 3 months if your are a cool and "mint" guy...).

In France, it's not very "politically correct" to love guns and weapons. Our laws and History are not the same like in US. Old Europe is... old Europe !

Marmule,

Welcome to the forum. It is sad to here the gun laws there. Hang in there and talk to your friends and family about your love for the sport of shooting. One person at a time you will show them that normal people enjoy shooting.

Let us know if you ever come visit America. I will take you out shooting (I think I have a gun that fits in every category). I know there are other members here that would take their European friends out for a range day too.

The right for a person to arm them self speaks loudly on their freedom....

It's a shame when the country that brought us the guillotine and the Marquis de Sade won't let folks have guns. Maybe its the old Revolution thing that has them worried.

Any, no matter what, they'll always be French Fries to me.

Well, well,

I'don't know why my friend, the marquis de Sade, is on this post. Maybe a great shooter ?... Wink

About guillotine, I'm agree, it's certainly not the best French gift to american people... But, French fries are not better for health...

So, in France, if it's difficult to obtain agreement for having "special" guns (9mm, .45, .357, etc.), it's easy to have bolt action rifles for hunting with licence or only speak to the Administrations.
But, it's always very controlled. Our history is not founded like yours. Historicaly, you're pioneers with guns - and an OK Constitution ! - not us. It's common to think people with guns are more dangerous than others without... and France is a small country... In the middle west it's more esay to shoot on the fields...

"Maybe its the old Revolution thing that has them worried." Ahah, sure !

Very difficult but interesting subject...

Actually, I've never been to France, and even though I took it for 3 years in school, I can't even order snails. I have met a couple guys from GIGN and RAID when that unit was being stood up in the 80's. They seemed pretty cool and Manuhurin revolvers seemed to be as nice as any S&W.

It's not about can, it's about why, you'd ever utter those words.

I'd live in France before I'd live in the UK. At least in France you can own a shotgun and do some hunting without being a Scottish Lord. The French know more about freedom than the English do at this point in history.

Vive la France!

I hope I can make it across the border. I hope to see my friend and shake his hand. I hope the Pacific is as blue as it has been in my dreams. I hope.

Ahem.

I live in England...

I have a shotgun... and eighteen other firearms, but...

I'm not a Scottish lord.

I guess that you, living in America, must be a cowboy with a machine gun. After all, we have seen you in the movies and you are ALL cowboys and you ALL have machine guns, right?

Don't talk such bullshirt.

I live in Tucson Arizona and we all have machineguns - MP40, Sten, M16, AK47, M2, etc. We buy them at Walmart and Kmart. We have shootouts in shopping malls each weekend. When our machineguns get dirty, we just sell 'em to the Mexican drug lords and buy new machineguns.

Now there's some real bullshirt, tac!
