Hey guys, I've searched online to find what rifles are and are not legal in Maryland, but can't find much of anything. I'd like to buy a Colt LE6920 online, but I don't know if it's legal in MD, especially with the receiver being marked "Restricted - Law Enforcement Use Only"
My FFL did not know if it is legal. Does anyone in MD have one or know if it's legal?

Thanks for the help.

Almost everything is legal. The only difference is is the weapon considered "regulated" or not. A regulated firearm must be sold on the same paperwork as a handgun.(Handguns are regulated as well.) M4 clones fall into that class. The only thing the seller has to do is remove the 30 round mag from the gun, if it is shipped that way. Plenty of evil black rifles in the state.

One note, unless you have "Designated Collector status" you can buy only ONE regulated firearm every 30 days. Becoming a collector is free and rather easy. If you plan on owning at least three firearms do it.

An excellent answer, Mike_in_MD, and welcome to the forum!

He's absolutely right, SupercarFreak. I would only add a few small notes:

1) HBAR configurations are NOT "regulated firearms" and you can walk out right away with those on nothing more than a 4473 and a successful insta-check.

2) Magazines larger than 20 rounds are perfectly legal to OWN and USE in Maryland, you just can't transfer or manufacture them here. You're in Towson, so I'd open a P.O. Box in Shrewsbury and then you can buy all the 30 round mags you like and have them shipped there. Hell, get yourself a couple of drum magazines while you're at it!

3) "Restricted - Law Enforcement Use Only" is typically language added by manufacturers during the Clinton AWB. It may be relevant in states where pre/post-ban still matters if it is an indication of manufacture date. That is irrelevant in Maryland.

4) You need a new FFL. An FFL who can't answer that very basic Maryland question is not likely to meet your needs, IMHO.

Sorry - I lost them all during a camping trip last week.

Does this forum software allow PM's?

As Rob mentioned, a dealer that does not know this basic question would be one to be wary of. Remember, not all MD FFL's have the extra state paperwork to handle handguns and EBR's. They only handle "traditional" rifles and shotguns. For that Colt you need one who can handle regulated firerams.

Contact me if you want the name of a good FFL not far from your location.

The software, yes. The owners, no. Generally, we put our e-mail addresses in our profiles and get in touch with each other that way.

Also, there is a search function, although there is some debate as to whether it works.

WOW! Thanks for the overwhelming help and info, Mike and Burton. Also, welcome to the forum Mike! This is why I love it here. Everyone is so helpful. The more time you spend here the more you will love it.

I've purchased 3 handguns so far so I'm aware of the every 30 day rule, 10 day wait, etc, etc.
I know of the MD approved handgun list. This will be my first rifle and I did not have a clue.

Again, thanks,

Mike, I will email you for a good FFL near me, thanks.

Mind my asking who your FFL is?

You can have anything you want - if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, have anything you desire, accomplish anything you set out to accomplish - if you will hold to that desire with singleness of purpose.

I'd also like to know. Is it a shop that only handles traditional long guns and shotguns or a place that handles regulated firearms?

Mike and Burton answered where spot on.

I will add that while we have some screwed up gun laws. CCW and loaded mags in your car = loaded gun come to mind. We can own mostly anything without much extra paperwork.
