I live in NJ and wanted to go to the range in NY. I am right on the NY/NJ border. Can i cross state lines with my handgun? I read that you can if you are competiting in a NRA event and you need paperwork. Can someone provide insight?

you are not as a non resident allowed to possess a handgun in NY state. The only exception being an NRA sanctioned competitive event. In those cases, you must keep your pistols unloaded in a locked container and keep a copy of the match program in your possession. Also you are not to stay in NY any longer than the time required to shoot the match.

Are you serious? What is wrong with those east coast states? How did things get that bad?

We have some of the worst gun laws in the country. California is probably the only state worse than NY. If you come here with a handgun expect to be locked up if caught. NYC is it's own country. The rest of NY can't bring a handgun into NYC limits. NYC has it's own license.

I thought The 1986 Firearm Owners Protection Act allows people to transport (unloaded, locked in trunk obviously) their firearms through interstate lines without any problems?

The key is THROUGH the state. Do not pass go, do not collect $200. Antcap was talking about stopping in NY at a range. That's a big no-no.

East coast gun laws? Yes, they're that bad. The Firearms Owners Protection Act covers interstate transport. If you pass through NY, you should be covered. If your destination is NY then you're not covered by the law and the trouble begins.
