HI,
I am currently a resident of New York State. I currently own the following handguns on a NYS carry permit. HK45 (10 round mags) HKP2000 (10 round mags) HKP7 (8 round mags) S&W model 36 cheffs special (5 shot revolver) SIG P226 (15 round PREBAN Mags manufactured and owned (not by me, I got them about ayear ago) before spet 1994) Assuming I get a class A license, will I be able to transfer all of these guns including the 226 to posses in MA? Assuming I can only get a class B license, will I be able transfer all but the sig with the prebans? How hard is it to get a Class A license BTW? Thanks a bunch, Alex. |

Are you moving to MA or trying to get a MA non-res LTC? If you're trying to get a MA non-res LTC, you can carry whatever you are legally allowed to carry in NY. I also live in NY and I have a MA non-res LTC. It's not that hard, but you have to take a course from a MA certified instructor (which I am, so let me know where you live and I may be able to help you out) and the license is only good for 1 year and needs to be re-newed every year for $100.
If you're moving to MA and intend on getting a MA LTC, then the Class A vs. Class B depends on the town where you live. The further away from Boston, the easier for a Class A. If you're moving near Boston, forget about a Class A. 239 .40 DAK 229 .40 220 Carry SAS 1911 STX FN Five-Seven |

Yeah sorry, I just took a job in Burlington. It is about 20 minutes outside Boston. I am moving to ma full time. Not sure what town exactly I just found out it is official today and will be looking for where exactly to live over the next month.
Any one know any gun friendly towns near Burlington ma? |

The short summary is: As a new resident, the law exempts you for 60 days in which to get properly licensed. It can easily take 45 days to get the license processed, so it may be advisable to have your guns held where you are until you are properly licensed. I would expect your NY License will be acceptable for the MA requirements.
You are allowed to bring in the guns and magazines that you currently own. If there is something that you know that you want and is not "approved in MA" - buy it now. GOAL - is the best source of Mass Gun Law information- and may have better "insight" on the licensing climate in a town by town basis. A License to Carry is at the discretion of the Chief of Police in the town where you reside. GOAL is a great advocacy group for all MA gun owners. You may want to join. : GOAL Website -Scott -Certified Sig Sauer Armorer -Grayguns Adjunct Instructor -NRA Instructor -MA Certified Firearms Instructor |

+1 on GOAL. You should also check out the Northeast Shooters forum. They also have a listing by town, which shows what towns are 2A friendly.

If you're going to be working in Burlington, you owe it to yourself to at least consider living in NH. The commute isn't all that bad and you can buy whatever guns and magazines you want... without any special licensing. |

GOAL is a must for these parts but NEShooters is your best bet for intel on friendly towns. There are too many around not to live in one.

Just remember that if you reside in NH and want to carry in MA you'll need a MA non-resi license. The cost of these is prohibitive at $100/year versus a MA Resi License at $100/6 years. Also, be careful that you don't move to MA with any non-preban high cap mags. BTW, according to the Northeast Shooters Forum, Burlington, MA is good for allowing unrestricted Class A gun licenses. New Hampshire. Commute might be a bit long, but you can own whatever you want, and it seems that getting an unrestricted non-res MA permit is way easier than a MA resident going for the Class A LTC. There's not much difference between liberals and zombies. Neither have brains, and both want to take yours away. |

MaSigchist is correct.
You are allowed to bring what you own. As far as gun friendly towns near Burlington, the closest you want to get to Boston is Waltham. Check out Maynard. As others have said GOAL is something you should get to know. Essentially, the farther from metro Boston, the more reasonable the chief. MA lets the chief of police of each town personally decide who can have what type of LTC. Towns like Cambridge, Somerville, Dorchester, Roxbury, Wellesley, anything touching Boston, all those chiefs only want people to carry illegally. Hey Arc,
Thanks for the reply. I am thinking of living in Burlington. Any idea "how green" that town is? Thanks, Alex |

Here's a list from the GOAL site. I was raised in Billerica, and that is right next to Burlington. According to GOAL, that's a gun-friendly "Class A" town.

If you're in Burlington, check out Four Seasons Gun Shop, in Woburn (next town over). One of the best in Mass north of Boston.
In a gross generalization, I'll say the towns between I-93 and Route 3 are more gun-friendly; between Route 3 and the Mass Pike less-so. ------------------------------ It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. Hey thanks for the replies guys. As an update, I just recieved my LTC-A with no restriction in Burlington without any problems. After I took the class and filled out the paper work, it only took about 3 weeks to get my license. Four seasons is great BTW.
All the best' Alex |
