When I fill out the Federal form for purchasing a gun, is the data on the form entered into a computer and stored indefinitely by the Feds ?

It's held by the FFL as long as they're in buisness. When they go out of buisness, the forms are sent to ATFE which, I think, holds them for some bizarre length of time like fifty years. I guess the theory is that that doesn't constitute registration.

It appears to me then, as does you, that we already have registration and didn't even "realize" it. All they have to do now is to collect the paperwork and start breaking down doors. That sucks.

Not necessarily. The dealer only has to keep the records for 20 years. The dealer is free to destroy them after that.

That's a bit better. Do you know if FFLs are sometimes held by buisnesses? The reason I ask is that the gun store I tend to go to locally is family-owned, so I was curious if 4473s have to be turned over the the ATFE when ownership of the gun store passes from one family member to another.

Naw, I doubt anyone will break down your door. Gun? What gun? Oh, that gun. I sold that gun years ago. Along with all my other guns. Smile

They were all lost in the dirigible crash.
